Dear Ladies,
The following is from Jennifer Schaaf:
Jennifer Schaaf wrote:
I wanted to let you all know the latest with us. We sheltered in AL until Wed the 31st and then drove to my mother's in NY. Nick went back down to Ocean Springs on Monday and called yesterday-our house is still standing but we had six feet of standing water (after the 20 feet of storm surge). Everything inside including the fixtures, cabinets, walls, etc is ruined. The kitchen cabinets were ripped off the wall,s the fridge was in the living room, the couch went partway through a wall. Everything is moldy and Nick says the stench is horrible. Still no power or water. There is nothing salvagable in the entire house. Plus, our ins. company says we aren't covered from water damage from storm surge, only water damage from the wind (ie if the roof blew off and it rained inside). Anyone in MS, do you know if this is true? If so, we may be devastated financially. Our needs are being met now, my mom's coworkers have supplied us with clothes and toys for the girls. But just thinking of what we'll need to replace when we finally get into a house...
Nick's clinic at Keesler was also under water, so all that multi-million dollar equipment is gone. So we don't even know if they will have a position for him...
Please pray-the stress and anxiety are really taking their toll on me. Nick and I decided to enroll the girls in school up here-it is a really great school district. Very small, about 300 kids in K-12. The girls are in classes of 14 children each, with a teacher, an aide, and a student teacher. They are enjoying it (so far!) and I feel that we made the correct decision. Of course, when we are back together and in our own home we'll be homeschooling again! |

I spoke with Jennifer last night. When I asked what tangible things we could provide right now, she immediately said, "Picture books!" Her girls are really missing their stories. MacBeth and I will set up an amazon account like the one we did for Kevin, only tailored specifically for Jennifer's girls. I will post more information as soon as we're all set up.
In the meantime, please pray for this family. Jennifer sounded as positive as possible until she mentioned her piano. Then, the reality of all she's lost hit her again. Of course, they are just htings, but when there are such memories attached to those things, the loss is very real. They have lost all material goods and the task of rebuilding and relocating is understandably overwhelming. Also, pray for Jenn's mother. As you might imagine, the sudden infusion of children and grandchildren in crisis has made for some tension.
We are in the process of doing a thorough search and locating anyone else who might need our help. When and if I contact people, Ill let you know.

Sounds good Elizabeth.
Ken and I have been wondering what we should do and how we should help.
I have yet to give a donation as I wanted to help a specific need if possible.
This is just the ticket.
I am glad that 4Real will be helping in the relief effort!
Thanks for putting this all together Elizabeth and MacBeth!

Elizabeth,
I recently received a forwarded special edition newsletter that Steve Woods had written about dealing with the aftermath of Katrina. It's written from his personal experience of going through hurricane destruction to their home and business last year in Florida. He has specific information particularly on insurance claims and what he calls the "Nightmare of Dealing with Insurance Companies" that I think could be helpful to Jennifer, since she was asking about that. He has some really good suggestions.
I was hoping to post a link to the newsletter on his website but it doesn't look like they archive those there. I'm assuming Jennifer is in contact with you directly and not reading the boards. I can forward the article to you directly to get to Jennifer. Or maybe we can contact Steve Woods to get permission to post it here (it is long though). Let me know.

I'm glad to see it's been posted somewhere. Good detective work, Laura.

Credit card is ready. Just let us know what to do. Tears here.
I can't imagine... or rather, I can. And it makes me sick to my stomach for them.
Glad we can help.

Here is the link to Jennifer's wish list:
Books. I may add more as she needs them.
It is also searchable under the name Derham (N. C.). The list is called "4Real-NO".

Where do we ship to? When I added a book to my cart only my shipping choices came up.
So glad you are doing this MacBeth!

Hmmm. It should be automated to Jennifer at her temporary address. Let me check and see how and way this is not working...

Mary Chris, I just tested it with Don's Amazon account, and Jennifer's address button (privacy protected) is on the right when you go to check out. Do you see it?
Anyone else having this difficulty? I am afraid that if it is not done in just the right way, there will be many duplicates. Directly shipping with the gift button should help keep track of books to eliminate duplicates.

All of the books that Jennifer mentioned are on the list MacBeth put up on the registry except for the little St. Joseph picture books. If you would like to send those, please contact me privately for Jennifer's temporary address.
Also, if you have a favorite not on the list that you would like to send to her three girls (6 and under), let me know; I'll keep a running list and I'll provide you with an address.

Elizabeth, do you have the same issue as Mary Chris? Anyone else? I would love to iron this out by tonight, if I can, but I am at a loss. It seems to be working on all my "spare" accounts .

MacBeth and Elizabeth,
Thanks for setting this up. The ship-to-Jennifer option worked just fine for me. This was such a great idea!

If your having trouble getting arrows to appear you may have to turn off your popups blocker if you have one and refresh the page. Sometimes just refreshing the pages does this too. HTH.

Wow!
Just ordered a few books for Jenn and saw that lots of books had already been sent off to her.
Way to go ladies!
I hope we managed to brighten her children's moods a little. Nothing like a good book to do just that!
Again, great idea Elizabeth and MacBeth!!
