Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Wasn't sure if this belonged under Real Learning or Literature!

My childern are asking if there's a way we can incorporate the Lord of the Rings into our schooling this year. They've seen the movies with me (lots of "skip" and "fastfoward" lol), and we just purchased the books. They are almost-12 and 10.

Are there any full-blown unit studies for this? (Googled, but didn't find much). I know places like Progeny Press and Teacher Created Materials sell literature guides. I'm wondering if I'll have a hard time finding something geared toward their age levels?

Thanks!

Angela mentions a LOTR newsletter for pre-teens here, and also mentions using the Literary Lessons from The Lord of the Rings curriculum.

We have Literary Lessons from Lord of the Rings that I'm about to sell because we didn't use it. NOT because it's not good, but because it's one of the things I thought would fit well, but ended up not fitting well.

It's wonderful, check it out!!!!

Tracy,

I'm considering buying the Literary Lessons. Can you give me details on what didn't fit with your kids? We have a bunch of LOTR fanatics here, and it's always looked like a (potentially!) great resource.

Thanks,

Anne Marie,
I had nothing to do with that it wasn't a *fit* as far as the curriculum went, it would have been great! It's that God led us to do something completely different, and the plan I had set up for our 9th grade son changed. That was really all there was to it.

By the time I'd bought it, he'd read the entire series already, and was into Redwall, and other things, so to go back and do it again just wasn't what he wanted, and I agreed.

So it was just one of those purchases that I thought would be so great, and it would have been if I had chosen it earlier. It was all purely timing for us.

    I hope this makes sense.

Hmmm, we've read the whole series, too - I hadn't thought about using the lit study as "going back" - thanks for the food for thought!
