I found a wonderful resource that could be used as a daily readings for teens and adults, even younger might be able to do it. The Liturgical Calendar is from 1931, so it doesn't quite match the current Roman Calendar or even 1962 completely, but still wonderful.
It's hard to find a copy, but it's all available online in different formats:
Character Calendar by Sister Mary Fidelis and Sister Mary Charitas, Bruce Publishing Company, 1931.
This is from the Introduction:
The CHARACTER CALENDAR is an effective utilization of the liturgy in the formation of character. It emphasizes the humanity of the saints and etches sharply a significant aspect of the life of each. It uses the Imitation of Christ in its most effective way in spiritual development. Its formulation of ideals is in a language within the ordinary person's appreciation and has a tang of its own. Its homespun directness and even colloquial quality breaks down barriers to action.
This combination of the liturgy, the Imitation of Christ of a Kempis, the modern publicity man's technique of slogans, and the Bible, will have a great appeal because of its novelty, its freshness, and its practicality. It will have, too, an effectiveness because the material is of such a nature as to look to action, and consequently to form the will.
Such material as this, good every year, could sever as an excellent basis for a practical training in meditation. It would help in prayer. It would become in very fact, a spiritual exercise. It would help mightily in that spiritual formation of the individual which is the goal of Christian education.
I am glad of the opportunity to commend this "labor of love" of Sisters Fidelis and Charitas, and proud of having had a little to do with it in its preparation.

I went and took a peek.. looks very interesting and it has an index so that you could find things without having to know the date
ETA the kindle version was awful.. lots of misc characters interjected through it.. making parts unintelligible.

Yes, I noticed on the text it was terrible. You'll have to read it in .pdf form.
I found the obituary for Mother Mary Fidelis which I found interesting. When she become Mother Superior of the School Sisters of Notre Dame she started the "Apostolate of Kindness" for her order.
I couldn't find any further information, but I sure would love to know more.

I liked the "read online" page with it too. You could "play" it and it would keep paging fwd slowly, it reads it outloud (like the kindle in the computer voice), you can page fwd and there's a bar across the bottom that you can move to where you want (like with a video)

I love the slogans -- not every day, but a nice thought to keep throughout the day.

Hey Jenn
Just wanted to say a big thank you for bringing this resource to our attention. The kids and I have been using it each day and love it.
I printed it and had it spiral bound for easy.
God Bless;
Trish

I'm so glad! I really think it's quite good. What ages are your children? Who do you think it targets the most?

What a great reminder, Trish! I meant to add it to our daily CCM work and then we haven't done CCM daily lately and it slipped my mind. We read about St. Januarius, though just now and I really liked it. My son read through several days on his own, Jenn. And he's a young 8. Advanced reader, though. But I do think I'd prefer reading it together so that I know he understands it.

My children are 8, 10, and 12.
It seems perfect for them.
We read it together and talk about it.

I wanted to bump this great thread in case any of you are refreshing some of your resources after Christmas.
I had been searching for a book copy of this book for YEARS with no luck and finally found a copy about a year ago!
We're using it as part of our Morning Basket. I am really in need of some simple, lovely reflections for the kids and this works so well! I like shorter reflections that keep the little ones attention, and of course, meaty and rich enough for the older kids. That's not an easy request to fill - yet Character Calendar does...and wonderfully!! All of my kids (4 yo - 16 yo) really get a lot out of the daily readings. They're short and the slogans for each day are absolutely wonderful!
Each day includes a saint for the day, and a very brief reading on the saint. And I mean VERY brief! Which makes this perfect if you need a very short devotional item in your mornings or afternoon. Then, after the little bio/history on the saint:
Some of the ways we're using this very practical, efficient and lovely book in simple, doable ways:
** Daily: Read the selection on the saint and write the simple slogan on our chalkboard in the learning room.
** Copywork: The selections from the liturgy and also from a'Kempis' Imitation of Christ make wonderful copywork selections. The slogans also make good copywork selections.
** Ideal: After each reading, there is a short little section titled "Ideal" - these often prompt great discussions and many have wonderful ideas that I would consider "rabbit trails". My older children enjoy pursuing some of these.
** Discussion prompts: Though short, the saints' lives often give us much to discuss.
------------------------------------------------
If you can find this gem, it's a treasure! If you can't find it affordably, follow Jenn's link:

...and invest the time to print it yourself! It's a wonderful, wonderful resource to use on a daily basis!

Jen, thanks for bumping! We've used it off and on for a while and I really enjoy it, and I think the children do too! We've been reading on my ipad, though.
Those of you who have printed it, did you use the archive pdf? I did the first 20 pages as a test, and some are quite blurry. Is the google version better? Does someone want to post a link to the "how to print ebooks thread"?
