Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My husband is not the most fashion-savvy, and tends to wear the same outfits over and over again. The same 2 pairs of pants (navy and khaki) throughout the work week even though he also has brown, gray, and black. He has trouble envisioning what goes with those colors.

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was tempted to lay out some outifts, take pictures, and post them on the closet wall for him and he LOVED the idea! So I'd like to make that part of his Christmas gift.

I've seen on Pinterest where people post pictures of various outfits complete with shoes, jewelry, and accessories. I went to one of those sites once and couldn't make heads or tails of how it was supposed to work. It seemed like it would take HOURS to go through all the options and pick things out for just a few outfits!

Anyways, I'm wondering if there is something like that that would allow me to maybe lay out some outfits for him in a similar manner? Where the pictures end up looking attractively laid out? Where I can just search for example "black dockers" "gray argyle sweater" "red striped button-down" etc. and save the outfit then print them all out several to a page? I hope this makes sense what I'm looking for.

If not I can easily just lay things out and take snapshots myself. Just wondering if I can make it look a little nicer. But also don't want to be too perfectionistic about it either - he certainly doesn't care about how fancy the pictures look. Hmmm ... maybe it's more for me since I'll be seeing this on my closet wall every day !

Also - I'm upgrading his wardrobe as well and wondering about current men's fashion trends. He normally wears a 32" length pant, which just grazes the top of his shoe when he is standing, but shows a lot of sock when he is sitting. It seems like the fashion now is to have the pants longer, to almost cover most of the back part of the shoe, and have a substantial break over the top of the shoe. I'm wondering if I should get him 34" length pants this time? What do you think? He's currently a senior engineer in his company and mostly wears the standard casual office wear, but I'd like to up his look a tad since I do think that appearance does count, that being more "put-together" contributes to his promotability.

All thoughts welcome! Thanks!

I'm not sure. Polyvore is the site I see most of the mix and match stuff, but it is overwhelmingly for women's fashion, and when I looked just now, I could not easily figure out how to find men's options, though, if you figured that out, it seemed that you could limit by brand/store, which would help with the scrolling.

You know how Garanimals has the matching tags for clothing that goes together? Maybe you could come up with a simple tagging system that involved different colored Sharpie dots on the tags or something similar so he could easily see what went together.

I'm not sure about the pants length. My dh has always worn his pants over the heel a bit. With his most recent wardrobe upgrades, he has had his pants tailored and custom hemmed. I've never gone with him to have it done, so I'm not even sure of the process, but I would think an experienced tailor could help you.

Dh looks to the Art of Manliness blog as a reference when he's unsure about buying clothes. There are many helpful articles there on how to choose and take care of mens clothing.

This is a bit off topic...but sort of related to what you are doing.....

When I read It's So You (you can also get it on Kindle at Amazon) I used this information in my dh's wardrobe as well.

It was a break through for both of us!!!!

My dh looks really good in black. So, his whole wardrobe is based on black. In the book she mentions creating wardrobes with 8 pieces.   I started with three pairs of pants (in his case 2 Black and 1 Gray) and I found 5 shirts that all look great with each pair of pants. Because he only wear this color he only has one color socks and shoes. Actually, he has two pairs of black shoes---which is better for the shoes to not wear the same pair every day.

All of his accessories---ties, cuff links, jackets, overcoat, work bag, watch match with this color scheme.

With this method...truly...he can grab any pair of pants/shirt/tie combo and it looks great!

I did the same thing for his casual clothes. I started with a pair of jeans and black cords and build his wardrobe around that with a good pair of casual shoes and I made a "work out wardrobe" for him with black sweats and dry fit shirts (he doesn't really wear this to work out in.....these are his lounging cloths and what he wears on Saturday morning, etc)

Perhaps this is a method you could consider? It really, really, simplified my dh's cloths and he really appreciates that he doesn't have to think about it---at all!!!!

It's has also really simplified shopping for him. I feel much more precise in what he needs what will work with what he has.

Another thing from the book that was so helpful was tailoring. Because we are buying less and better we have tailored most of dh's pants. I don't totally know about style but anything that fits well looks much better!

As for style I would take two approaches. First study you dh's body style and figure out what is the best for his body. We own the book Dressing The Man which goes through some of that. I am *positive* if you searched the internet you can find all the information that you need---basically it's the man's version of apple, pear, hour glass and what looks good to balance those aspects.

After that I would try to figure out what style you are going after and try to find a store that carries that style and talk to them. Personally, I like more the classic mans look and in you dh's field that is probably appropriate. I HATE the European skinny pants look on men---even the model men that can pull it off!

As for the pant length there is a "formula" for where they should hit. I am sure you can scour the web for that too and then have the pants tailored to that length...sounds like it needs to be longer than what they currently are.

I hope that helps....

On the colored dots idea.. what about colored hangers? then the brown pants get put on the red hangers and the shirts that go with it on the red hangers but the black pants and the shirts that go with black pants get put on black hangers. Of course that doesn't help if you use the fancier wood hangers.. ribbons tied on the hanger maybe?

Some shirts can go with more than one color pair of pants.

Another idea which might be helpful is a clothes valet. Fil was color blind and had similar difficulty choosing suits, ties and accessories. Mil used to set his clothes out for the next day on a clothes valet.
