Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 4 yr ds sleeps under his pillow. I think he wants to drown out stimulus. My dd 9 used to do this, but under the blanket. Ds has been doing this most every night now. It worries me. When I remove the pillow his face is red...I don't think he is getting enough oxygen.
Has anyone else experienced this?
I will remove the pillow during the night... he might get it and under he goes. I may just remove it all together?
Should I be more concerned?

Hi Tammy,

My ds6 does this too and has been doing it since he was a baby. Even before we gave him a pillow, he used to wrap his blankie around his head and rock himself to sleep. Dh and I used to wonder if he was disturbed what with the way he used to chant or sing and rock under the blankie or pillow. At this point, I've given up on trying to break him of the habit. Tried that, never worked. Apparently he NEEDS to do that so he can wind down and fall asleep, and he needs to block out the noise from the other children, which is comparatively little when compared with his bedtime habits! I used to be afraid he'd stop breathing. We were never even allowed to sleep with our heads under our covers as children, but my oldest can't get to sleep unless he's all wrapped up or stuffed under a blankie. I usually check on him during the night. I don't set my clock or anything, just do it if I'm up for the bathroom. He usually has it pulled up just enough for him to get some fresh air, while still covering his eyes and most of his head. I do remember asking the pediatrician about this and she didn't seem too concerned so I let it go.

Dh calls him "turban boy" at bedtime not too politically correct, I suppose!

I hope mine breaks his habit before college...could make for some very interesting roomate experiences!

Tammy,

I've always slept with the covers and pillow over my head, but I do sleep on my side and have my face peek out a bit for fresh air, but as a younger child I didn't. For me it's an "eye and ear thing" I want the light and noise blocked out, but I also want my ears to be warm.

My son sleeps with his blanket over his head...sweats profusely, but can't sleep without it. And sometimes, he's wrapped tightly...like Kristine's "turban boy". We just make a point to check on him periodically. Two nights ago he was drenched in sweat...had to change him completely.

Is your son sleeping on his back or stomach usually? There is oxygen. My one bil sleeps on his stomach with face straight down into the pillow...I can't figure out how HE can breathe! But he's still alive.

I think if he weren't getting oxygen he would be pale or blue. A red face just sounds like he is warm.

I wouldn't worry!
