Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have been listening to Around the World in 80 days on cd, and we've all enjoyed it so much.

But today in the car when my ds realized that Phileas Fogg had actually won the bet, he was so excited I thought he would explode with joy. He had a huge grin on his face and could hardly stay in his booster seat. What a moment- that look on his face was something I'll always remember.

There is *nothing* like a good story!

Melinda, the power of great literature can not be underestimated. In experiencing one work of truly great (I mean, moral literature with a Christian worldview) literature, our children not only are exposed to the entire range of human emotion, but they are also learning:

*how to speak and write in grammatically correct sentences
*all the vocabulary they will ever need, and then some, especially if the book was written before 1920.
*a great deal of history, geography, culture, and world religion
*the commonality of mankind
*the price of sin, weakness, and immoral behavior
*how to sustain attention
*how to connect cause to effect, sequence events, get the main idea, distinguish fact from fiction, identify propoganda, and all those other "critical reading" skills so artificially and ineffectively taught in workbooks
*how to imagine
*the wonder of knowledge
*the reality of the unseen presence of Truth

The riches of literature! No homeschooling mom should ever feel guilty about not "schooling" in a given day if her children listened to great literature, even if it was in the car!!! They learn more from this than from any other single academic pursuit, I believe.

And we loved Around the World in 80 Days, too!
