Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 2 girls are having their first reconciliation the first saturday in May.

DD8 is quite nervous. However dd13 is approaching it quite maturely. She knows nothing they have done is all that bad, and it's only been a month since they were baptized. She said, it's not going to be fun, but it's not going to be that bad.

And she's right, they are good kids, and they haven't done much wrong, they haven't even missed or fussed about Mass. Today was 3rd Mass this week Who'd have thunk it!

Any tried and true advice for the girls?

I was lucky enough to work with a monsignor who wanted people to come to this wonderful sacrament. He told me privately and in public settings that:

1) (Second Most Important!!!) God blesses His priests by allowing them to forget/not remember the details of the sins confessed to them. I have since seen this observation corroborated by more than one priest. So, there's no worry that your priest-confessor will remember every single detail of what you tell him. He won't. God helps him carry that burden. If Father meets you on the street on Tuesday, he won't associate your handshake with last Saturday's Confession. Really.

2) We need to remember, as we confess our sins, that God asked us to come to Him in this sacrament. He will truly forgive us. The priest is His intermediary, but it is God and God alone who forgives our sins. The priest can never, ever tell anyone what penitents confess to them. Ever. Under any circumstances. Ever.

3) It's helpful beyond measure to examine your conscience on the day you plan to receive this sacrament. Think carefully about the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes. Have you strayed from them? For children, that's the easiest way to help them look at their actions and decide what might have gone wrong.

4) (MOST important!!!) When Father tells you that God has absolved you from your sins, it FEELS GOOD. Those sins are gone forever. Yes, it's scary to tell someone you've messed up and done wrong things. Yes, it's scary to wait in line thinking about all of those wrong things. But...if we are truly sorry, God forgives us. Forever! How wonderful! Your heart feels lighter, you approach Holy Communion knowing you've done what God asks us all to do.

to your children as they prepare for this wonderful, healing sacrament.

My girls went this morning, they both had their first reconciliation. I had worked with them a bunch. We read alot from the Devotional Stories for Little Folks. I think it helped alot.

Neither was overly nervous going to see their chosen priests(we had 6 available). Both walked away with HUGE smiles on their face. DD13 said she felt SO light.

They did way better than I could have hoped for.

Lovely!!!

"So light." That's just the way we're all supposed to feel. Nice! (I hope she tells her friends...maybe her Catholic friends will ask their parents to take them!)

Congratulations!
