Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am struggling to find something to use for religious ed for my dd for next year. We have been using Faith and Life but it is really not working for us. Has anyone used the Image of God series for this grade? I know the teachers manual is suggested but is it really necessary? We are debating on attending CCD next year.If we are attending CCD do you think that is enough and just liturgical year activities are fine for home? Any other suggestions for religious ed for this age would be great.
Thanks,

I don't have specific 5th grade ideas (well, I could have a few, but I've not homeschooled 5th grade yet so my opinions might not be helpful ). BUT to answer your question about CCD. If you end up doing it, see what curriculum they are using and then decide from there if you want to do something more at home (in addition to discussing and clarifying what is being taught at CCD) or if the liturgical year activities will do it for home (as you know, some programs are better than others).

I have been reading St Patrick's Summer to my 5th grader as well as his younger sisters. He also reads his F&L on his own and we discuss it. Next, I plan on doing Know Your Mass with him just to reinforce what he should already know.

Other than that, I encourage saint biographies and we try to celebrate the liturgical year. We also try to discuss the readings and homily after Mass.

Thanks for the help. I know what curriculum is used for CCD and I do not have a problem with it. My problem is more with the teachers mostly just goin through the motions in their teaching. We have been teachers for the last 3 years, for my dd's age so we knew what was taught that day and we could go over it with her. We are tough challenging CCD teachers. Shouldn't we be? It is SOO important for these kids to know this information. I am amazed at the number of them who do have Bibles or even attend mass.(That is another post.)
Molly, I was looking at Know Your Mass for next year and was debating about it. We are doing St. Patrick's Summer over this summer. We read earlier this yr Life of Our Lord and we are now reading The First Christians.
Thanks again for the help.

Teaching CCD is no picnic. Its a lot of work. I happen to enjoy it but my partner is seriously burned out. We have kids who come from all backgrounds from completely uncatechised to really up to speed. This isnt the easiest thing to adress in a class of 15 kids. Im sure you know how it can go.

Our 5th grader has an excellent CCD class and our 3rd grader is doing 2nd gr CCD so he can receive his sacraments this year. I have been pleasantly surprised with the whole experience bc I had so often read online so many negative experiences with CCD. In fact for us it has been rather good and has worked out to be plenty.
