I'm really gung-ho for the paint your own pottery places. We have one in Manassas Claytime Cafe. These are individually owned, not franchises. My siblings and their crew have now gone twice to do little painting projects. I've painted some tiles and have had such a wonderful time. My first tile was Marian themed: a blue fleur-de-lis on a golden background. I just got back last week's project: Nativity scene, simple silhouettes. I started with a rubber stamp pattern.

This has been so much fun to do...I want to make it a girls' night out or date night to spend more time painting, but I've been trying to "create" feastday themes or seasonal themes, finding symbols to paint on the tiles. I'm only thinking of tiles right now because one of the most inexpensive projects there.

I want to get something that I can put the tile inside (wooden thing) that the tile goes on display for the feastday...an individual tile. There are also trays that can fit several tiles, so I was thinking making a tile for each patron saint in the family and having a special "Nameday Tray" for our celebrations.

I've also wanted to make a special plate, like Pampered Chef and other places have "Today is Your Special Day" but I haven't figured out words to include the ideas 1) God bless you 2) You're special today. This would be for birthdays and namedays. Any ideas?

Where did you find a tray to fit the tiles you painted? I am curious b/c my sister and family painted many many tiles for their kitchen...unfortunately....their overly loving puppy jumped up in excitement to "give love" and knocked over and broke 50 tiles.

She still has a few left so I would love to get her a tray to display them.

I think your tiles idea is wonderful. I am thinking we may do this as an family activity in Advent.

The store has a tray. It fits 6 of the small tiles (which I made the large ones

)..total cost would be $50 including the tiles and painting them. If you have one of these around nearby they can special order some items like this.

I know...think of the possibilities. Jesse Tree symbols, etc. I need to find a cheaper way to do this, because I want to do so many. I'm sure MaryM knows where!

My sister was creating for her backsplash and then for various other spots along the wall. It would have been so lovely for them all to be displayed. Oh, well they do all love their puppy...they prayed for him for years.

I have a great spot above my buffet which would be perfect for some tiles with religious symbols. You now have my wheels spinning!

You are giving me way to much craft credit, Jenn. I haven't done tile painting. I do know that you can get some paints, for example Pebeo (search the site for Porcelaine 150), that are supposed to be permanent on glass or tile when baked in your own oven. I'm not sure how they compare to the overglazes that you would paint with and then fire in the kiln like they do at the shops like you mentioned.

Here are some general instructions for painting tile with this type of paint.

I've heard that those shops sometimes will just charge for kiln time and you can bring your own pieces in - it would be cheaper to buy tile in bulk, paint/overglaze it and bring it in to be fired. What about finding other kiln sources like universities or community centers that do pottery classes. They may let you have less expensive kiln time (or befriend a potter - my parents had a friend who had her own kiln in her house).

Well Mary, even though you haven't done it, you have a lot of great ideas.

The Porcelaine 150 looks like something similar to old fashioned china painting, like the Victorians did? Or am I off the mark.

We do have a Pottery place in Old Town Manassas, so I should check out my options. Don't want to buy a boatload of tiles and then have nowhere to use a kiln!

But to search for the tiles. Marybeth, where did your sister get hers?

Doing a little Googling this afternoon and found this site which has trays and frames for good prices. I haven't used them...but I may soon!
