I have a soon to be 5yo and a 6yo. I wanted to use Faith and Life with my 6yo but b/c of money issues, i'd like something both can use. I do want CGS but finances at the moment wont allow me to get that til around Christmas time. At the moment we're using Seton Kindergarten Catechism and while it is a bit repetitive, it's pretty conversational which is why i can include my youngest. I dont think she'd enjoy it if i just redid the Kindergarten book with her. I was thinking of getting Seton Religion 1(since it's conversational like the Kindergarten book) and use that with both until i can get CGS. Do you think Faith and LIfe is something i can incorporate my youngest into or something only my oldest would only be able to do? I'd purchase both but again, not enough money at the moment and we're nearing the end of the Kindergarten book.

What do you think? What would you do? TIA!!

I don't have much experience with Faith and Life. We used it in Third Grade once.

This year when I wanted a text for my younger boys (a little older than yours), I went with the Seton seond grade books because my memory of the Faith and Life was that it was a little terse, a little more dense, and a little more teacher intensive. (I'm not familiar with the first or second grade F&L so I could be wrong. I'm just explaining my decision to go with SEton.)

I also like the way the Seton religion books allow for discussion. They are very easy to use. We've been happy with them so far.

I don't think you'll go wrong either way.
(In fact, you could probably continue with the Kindergarten book with all of them until Christmas!)

I had a few other thoughts Graciefaith.

While waiting for Christmas, you could continue use the K book for memory work. Mother of Divine Grace school recommends (for the Latin memory work in 3rd grade) three new words a week. Each new week addd another new three and continue to review the previous weeks up to (I think) 12 cards.
For younger kids this might be too many.

Or try out the Catechism of the Catholic Church - read some of the sections your children have questions about
and see how it goes. If it's a hit --continue! If not, move onto something else.

I like to read through the St. Pius X Catechism Each Q & A is very developed.(I think it would be a little too challenging for small children to memorize this. But maybe it would work for discussion.)

Finally, last year in our home, I made

Catechism Stick Pictures to help the children review their catechism and memorize the answers verbatim. We even put together a catechism Bingo game Maybe I need to get these things out again! Thanks for reminding me.

(I just found that I put my catechism posts in one spot on my blog.)

Personally my most favorite catechism is the Image of God series. CHC sells the series through Grade 8. I think that you could by the teachers manual for Grade 1 and read through it with both kids but the activities manual is definitely Grade 1 material. They do a nice job reaching kids with slightly modern language but the content is definitely present.

Hi Gracie,

We love Seton's Religion books. The artwork is beautiful and it's written so that the student is able to read it himself. As a matter of fact today my 8-year-old struggling reader read the lesson to me & then said "I love these stories! I wish I could read them all today!" How's that for a recommendation?

Helen, you have so many great ideas and i think i could use that 2nd link for discussion.

We're on the last chapter of the Kindergarten book so i dont think i could stretch it out til Christmas but i might go through it one more time and just skip all the reiteration. I might try and find some creative ways/projects to attach to some of the chapters as well.

Helen, your stick pictures and bingo game are a real inspiration!!

I'm very satisfied with Seton so far. Dd1's CCD teacher always comments each Sunday after class on how well she knows it all. And yes, the artwork is absolutely beautiful. They didnt really pay attention to that til we got towards the end so maybe another brief run through of the book will open their eyes to the art work they didnt notice before.

I would just like something i could do with both of them b/c once we get CGS, Seton would be just supplemental, but more convenient as it would be one text for the both of them and of course, CGS would be done together as well.

I just got my Faith and Life Review copies. They are beautiful! I really, really like this series. In fact I think that I will be switching from the Seton books that we've been using up to now.
