Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I asked MaryM the other day if she's found any books that teach children the technique of watercoloring, particularly for nature journaling. I'm looking for books that either a child could read on his own, or help me guide a young child, but done in plain, simple terms since I'm a beginner, too. What I don't want is adult beginner books; I want something at a child's level.

Mary said she hasn't come across anything like that. I did find a book at a library book sale on Saturday that fits a little into what I was searching for:

Collect, Print and Paint from Nature by John Hawkinson (1963)

While searching I see that this CM blog thought it was a great find for her, too.

He has another title
More to collect and paint from nature

ETA: The above title was a treasure of Dewey's Treehouse.

It's a start, but I'd love to hear about any other resources you might have found!

Hi Jenn,

Since that conversation ended a bit abruptly (sorry about that ) your question here in a calmer moment gave me time to think. There are a couple books I would suggest looking at. They may not be exactly what you are looking for but I think could help. I had posted them in an earlier thread so am just reposting that.

Watercolor
Unfortunately both of these look like they are out of print but they are pretty good for presenting watercolor technique and special effects for children (and adults learn, too).
Watercolors (Creative Painting and Drawing)
I Draw, I Paint Watercolor: The Materials, Techniques and Exercises to Teach Yourself to Paint With Watercolors - Isidro Sanchez
(Each of the above authors have a series of art books which include other mediums also like colored pencil, markers, tempera. )

I got this last year and liked it. It made learning fun, although it isn't very technical. It teaches the basics and is fine for children and adults. The paints that come with it are good quality too.

Watercolor for the artistically challenged

not exactly what you wanted but i have the water color book here http://www.stmichaelschool.us/bookstore.html
and it is a good intro for teaching wwt on wet painting through the creation story.

the site is neat too- a greek orthodox waldorf style school.

I got my copy through paidea

bumping this to see if anyone has any other suggestions or anyone's liked any of the suggested titles above. The library doesn't have many of these, and I hesitate to buy without seeing them.

A bit off topic....but felt the need to share......Look at this blog....isn't that fun to look at?

Jenn ... I've added some books to my bibliography from In His Image that I've just posted on my Nurturing Creativity blog ... those should give you a good start!

The one that has helped us the most is probably the Waldorf-y one, Painting with Children by Brunhild Muller.

I have an adult style book which is quite nice - Botanical Illustrations in Watercolor by Eleanor Wunderlich, but none for children so this thread has been very helpful for me! I found the two John Hawkinson books to be readily available and very inexpensive right now.

A friend told me about this site which looks very promising and I'm considering - Illustrated Watercolor Journaling. Their Beginning Watercolor Journaling DVD looks really neat! It might be just a bit out of reach of your oldest, Jenn, but not for long, and I thought others might be interested as well. It's on my short list for the future.

Thanks for bumping this thread, as I've been frustrated in my search for art technique books (other than drawing) for children.

I have a Waldorf book called Painting with Childrenwhich is okay... but not written *for* children.

If I could have seen my future, I would have scrapped most of my college classes for art lessons!!!

I checked out The Botanical Palette: Color for the Botanical Painter by Margaret Stevens last week and it's so gorgeous. Definitely for older students, but very practical, with practice pages and useful notes on watercolor. It's the book that follows The Art of Botanical Painting which our library doesn't have, but I'll have to find because I'm totally inspired.

I'm having internet difficulties, so I'll come back later about some other books.

Did you see she has workshops/retreats in California??????

My dream has now changed.   Instead of us all meeting up in 20 years at the Petersboro Basket Tent Sale in New Jersey.....I think we should all go on this Watercolor Journaling Retreat in California!!!!!!!!!

And we could bring our Peterboro baskets full of watercolor supplies.

Count me in!

Ooh, this does look really good! The DVD looks fabulous and I love their work. Definitely inspiring.

I'm afraid I'm out of the loop on Peterboro.

I got the first book by M. Angels Comella, and it looks very good. What I like are books a child can follow along by himself and experiment and learn.

After falling in love with these John Hawkinson books:

I tracked down a few more of his art books. These are written for children. They are all OOP. My library doesn't have any of these titles. A few are harder to find, but the ones I have found so far I really like:

Paint a Rainbow
The introduction gives some hints on supplies, even to making one's own watercolor paints and using baby food jar lids to hold the paints. The story is about an artist and how he sees the world. Each page has the left side with instructional pictures and directions (a child in the photographs) and the right side is the story illustrated with simple watercolor pictures.

Our Wonderful Wayside
Not watercolor instruction, but a nature study's dream, covering plants and other things we find along in the nature (wayside). He goes seasonally, giving suggestions on collecting, art ideas, craft ideas, even making jam.

Pat, Swish, Twist: and the Story of Patty Swish
The book is divided into two parts, first part a picture story for the reader to fill in the words, then the second part is instructional on how to paint an original story about Patty Swish or other animal. The book covers only three watercolor strokes, Pat, swish, and twist, and suggests using just a foam brush.

It's delightfully simple concept, but not dumbed down and perfect for the child who loves to tell stories with their drawings.

A Ball of Clay
Not watercolor, but great instructions on learning to use clay. I love that it starts in finding your own clay in streams or outdoors.

The negative side is these books are OOP, and the photos are black and white. The illustrations are colorful and engaging. I don't feel like the author is talking down to the reader at all, nor are the projects childish.

I must not, I can't look. You see, I avoided that thread in the beginning. I spend way too much, have way too much on my wish list to spend, and how can I covet anything else? GET THEE BEHIND ME, SATAN!

How did you miss that, Jenn?

No matter...bring any basket to the watercolor seminar.

Suzanne and I have gallavanted (is that a word?) across the globe with our Peterboro baskets (each containing a bottle of wine) imagining our presence at a variety of locales. So far, we've been to a Simply Charlotte Mason conference, the Peterboro tent sale, and now a Watercolor seminar in California (though I'm thinkin' we can pick up some nice wine while we're there girls!!) Who knows where we're headed next!

All are welcome! Grab your favorite basket...we travel first class...and eat only big people food...and drink wine...and chat....and then back to reality.

I see Young at Art: Teaching Toddlers Self-Expression, Problem-Solving Skills, and an Appreciation for Art by Susan Striker has a wonderful list of books on art for children.

For Wet on Wet Technique, Watercolor, she lists these two titles:

Francie's Paper Puppy by by Achim Broger and Michele Sambin, Natick, Mass: Picture Book Studio, 1982.

Water Dance by Thomas Locker, San Diego, Ca Harcourt, Brace, 1997. See blog post and Life and Work of Thomas Locker)

I'm not sure the connection to the technique except for inspiration. Do you evaluate books sometimes by the books recommended in the back?

If it doesn't matter how it's packed, I'll bring wine, even champagne and adult food. Place and time?

Adult company, adult conversations, learning some wonderful things, no interruptions....
