Hi Everyone,

I have a question for you. This year, we are going to be following as much as possible Mater Amabilis Level 3 for our two oldest dc, ages 13 and 11. My question is this: MA suggests doing both national (For us, that would be U.S.) and World history each year. Oldest dc has never really had a full year of any history - we had been following the MODG Syllabi the past couple of years, so everything was broken up into Egyptian one year, Greek and Roman the next, etc. Do you all think it would be possible for me to just focus on U.S. History this year, instead of doing both U.S. History and World History together? I was thinking it would be a good fit especially with this Fall being an election season (also, dc likes U.S. history, and has indicated a desire to focus on U.S. history this year). I don't have anything against doing both histories in a given year, but my oldest will begin high school next year, so I was wanting to focus on one region and bring him up to speed at least with that before I have to begin counting credits. What do you all think????

Sounds reasonable to me. Plus if you get bored with US history mid-year you can always switch to world history then.

Sounds fine to me too . With MA we opted to follow CM's own model of studying two (or more!) strands of history simultaneously, but it certainly doesn't have to be done that way. If focusing on American history over one year is what will suit your family better, then do it!

I would say I think there is a lot to be said for reading through a survey of world history at some point, just to get the overall perspective on what happened where and when. I never did that, and with hindsight I wish I had.

Thanks for the feedback! Kathryn, I agree about reading through a survey of world history - if only my oldest ds were even one year younger, I would do both strands of history simultaneously with him. While there were many things I liked about MODG, one regret I have is that the history was so broken up into bits and pieces, a little this year, a little more the next. If you stay with MODG, I suppose it all works out for you in the end, but in the case of our family, we did not stay with MODG, so now I am trying to "back-fill", so to speak, what we never really got to. My ds loves history, so I fully expect we will be doing a lot of it in high school. It has actually been really hard for me to choose which of the two threads to focus on (and I actually wanted to study ancient history with him, too!).
