Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I would like to start including current events as part of my upcoming 6th graders curriculum. My 4th grader will most likely participate as well. Can anyone provide some ideas on how you share age appropriate current events with your kids. I would love it if I could find a Catholic resource, but a good secular news source would work, if need be.

Thanks for your help.

Blessings,

Melisa

We like CNN student news... it is a daily 10 minute news program. We have watched over a year now, and there has not been anything inappropriate for jr/sr high, IMO. You would probably want to screen it, though, for younger children (always a good idea no matter what the age). In today's segment there was a spot about the transgender bathroom issue... but that is something my kids know about and that we have discussed.

Rome Reports is also good- but it just has current event involving Pope Francis.

Melinda,

Thank you. I had thought about CNN Student News. I will give it a try. I didn't know about Rome Report. I am anxious to take a look at it for myself.

I also like the idea of having kids keep a "current events" notebook where they cut and paste various news articles. I like to give my kids articles from our diocesan newspaper and I ask grandparents to cut out articles that they think might be of interest from the newspapers and magazines they read. That way I'm not previewing everything myself but I'm also not giving them an entire newspaper/magazine when some of the content may not be appropriate.

In our house, middle school and up use Student News Daily

There is also an app for tablets/mobile devices.

We also use CNN student for high school.

Zenit is a useful site.

Also National Catholic Register.
