Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

2005-02-16_192903_Southeast_Asia_Earthquake_Tsunami_and_Emer gency_Relief.doc

This is a two page Word Document with links for our family's current study of the Southeast Asia earthquake and tsunami. It also takes a brief look at emergency relief efforts from our family's personal interest point of view. There are a few links that have helpful graphics, such as a simulation of the tsunami and before and after pictures of Banda Aceh. There is also a child-friendly experiement that you can do to help explain a tsunami using a balloon, pin, and bathtub with water.

I'm hoping to collect some living books on this topic. If I have much luck I'll post that list as well.

Please keep your prayers coming for the victims, relief workers, and all affected by this natural disaster.

Love,

Thanks for the great resource compilation, Angie. We did the tsunami bathtub experment from Treasure Box last month. It was really helpful and helped the kids understand some of the dynamics behind this force of nature.

If anyone ever travels to Hawaii, there is a great Tsuami museum on the big island of Hawaii in Hilo.

After we visited the museum I had a hard time sleeping in our cottage just yards from the ocean.

A very large tsuami devestated Hilo in the 40s and gave rise to the warning system that was put in the Pacific rim.

Yes, Angie- this is a difficult subject and we approached it carefully- praying for all those affected, too.

Oh, also does any one know if Mother Teresa's order helped any of the victims in India? Tracking Catholic relief organizations would be a great study- lots of geography in seeing the affected areas and also to see how help is being given. Focus on the positive side of the disaster.

Does anyone have info on this perhaps?

Good questions! I did a quick google search and came up empty handed. Great idea, too!

Our family is being truthful yet not graphic about the human suffering involved with this disaster. We tend to ask the children questions about scenarios and let them think for themselves about the outcomes. Each child appears to have a "self-editing" process that allows them to envision disaster to their own level. We are also focusing on the Christian principle that suffering is purposeful. As St. Teresa says, "Everything is grace."

Thanks, Cindy
Love,
