Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dh would like for the two of us to get away for a couple of days before #4 makes his/her grand entrance late this summer (I'll be 30 weeks, so I'll be okay to fly). He's got some airline miles to his name, thanks to all the traveling he did earlier this year. Right now, it looks like flying mostly across country from a Wednesday morning to Friday afternoon, with the kiddies staying with my in-laws.

Has anyone else done something like this, even though you really didn't want to? This would be in conjunction with his birthday, so he's really excited about the idea, but I've got all the worst-case scenarios running through my head! (I'm a worrier by nature, and desperately trying to get over this!)

Am I just nuts???

We had a weekend away just before our 2nd child was born. It was at mil's insistence and she and my sis looked after our first one.

We had a lovely time, and it was good to recharge our batteries a bit. It was also around the time of my 30th birthday, so a good chance for a celebration. But we only went about an hour's drive away, and I think that was probably the limit of my comfort zone.

I can really understand your reluctance, but if your kids needed you, you could fly straight back. And you're more likely to have an accident in your car than in a plane.

The other side of it is how comfortable you are in leaving your kids with your inlaws, and how familiar they are with their house. Could your inlaws maybe come to your house instead? I certainly felt more comfortable knowing that my daughter was in a familiar environment.

We've gone on 3 or 4 overnights without the kids, but we've not flown. I've always really enjoyed them, and not felt guilty at all. I can see how flying might be a bit different--could your dh exchange his airline miles for points with some snazzy resort hotel closer? I think the farthest we've gone is 3 hours by car--that was definitely my comfort zone.
It's pretty exciting for you and your husband!

Anne:
My dh has a supplier who is taking clients and spouses on a CRUISE for 4 days. We are going and Truth be told, I'm not that fired up about it.   But, he's really excited about it and wants to go. the couple people i've told think I'm NUTS to not want to go, but I just keep thinking of making all the arrangements, and having a horrible 5 days or so cleaning up and catching up when I get back. Not to mention that we don't have family around and the girls would be in the charge of 5-7 different people over the several day time period. Some at our house, some at theirs. The thought of it makes me nauseous.

I'm not really all that into "socializing" either these days, and secretly hope no one will talk to me . Although, I do appreciate a good meal (w/out screaming baby)!

But, we've never done anything like this. DH at age 38 had probably resigned himself to bachelorhood, yet here he is 7 years later with 4 little girls. I guess we need this time to be alone and have a bit of fun.

I think it's natural to not want to "rock the boat" especially when you're pregnant!!!!!! But, if dh really wants to do it, then DO IT! And, everything will be fine!

There is a reason he is so exccited about it....even though men don't always verbalize exactly what they're feeling, just the fact that he is excited, means "something".....that he needs to connect with you, needs some down time before baby #4 comes..whatever.

Okay, I tried quoting all of you, and can't seem to do it!

Doris: This will actually be in conjunction with dh's 30th bday, too--and he'd like to celebrate. And while yes, its true that I'm far more likely to be killed on Rt. 66 here than flying, I have trouble rationalizing that at 30,000 feet!

In terms of the kids staying with my in-laws-- they stay with my mil every Wednesday for a few hours while I do my grocery shopping. The kids have stayed overnight a few times, and its always been weird for me, though nothing horrible has happened. I am very protective, and feel that a: my mil is too trusting and b: my fil doesn't pay attention. I feel kind of like they raised their kids in the 70's, and they don't get if they take my kids to the grocery store or something, they can't let go of them or some ax murderer (or worse) will snatch them. Like I said, I worry to much.

Noreen: I would feel WAY more comfortable about going not too far away and staying at a nice hotel for a few days, but dh has his heart stuck on Vegas.    The original idea was the Bahamas, since it would be a short flight from here, but of course, its all blacked out for our time

Therese: Thank you, I needed to hear that

Suzanne: I hope you do go on the cruise and have a wonderful time! (Its amazing how I can tell you that, but I . . . ) I do appreciate your insight about the fact that dh is excited about this for a reason-- he's been bogged down so much at work lately, and would like for the two of us to get away by ourselves. I have to keep his feelings in mind!

Thanks for the help, ladies! Sometimes I need a kick in the rear . . .
