Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Ladies,

For all of you living in NOVA: do you know a good place to see the bluebells when they bloom? Um, and, when do they bloom . I've never seen them in person, but the picures on Elizabeth's blog are so pretty and I thought I'd take the kids to see them. (They're not protected by any law from picking, are they?)

Thanks!

They are protected from picking. We usually go to Bull Run Regional Park. They're also awesome at Riverbend. Let's try to plan an outing.

I didn't answer the "when" part of your question Anne. Two years ago, it was the third week in April. Last year, we were there April 11, though they bloomed about a week earlier. We'll keep a watch out!

I'm intrigued! I wondered what kind of flower that was in your picture, Elizabeth! I don't know anything about bluebells - I never saw one in my native CT.

Thanks for pointing this out Anne!

Can they not be picked because they're in a park and that's not allowed or are they endangered? Can they be home grown?

Oh, this sounds like so much fun! I only hope that our crazy weather this winter didn't kill them off or something!!

Wakefield Park in Annandale/Fairfax is also a great place to see the bluebells-along the stream anyway. You feel like you're in another world among a sea of blue! I love that time of year!

I just checked and if you go by when they've scheduled the annual walk at Bull Run, they may be peaking right around Easter Week (at least at Bull Run). What a beautiful way to celebrate Our Lord's Resurrection!

Maria, the stream basically wraps around the entire park but the side with the bluebells is about a couple hundred yards to the left (if you're just coming into the park) of the softball and soccer fields. There are a whole slew of trails that you can you hike and bike on that meander along the stream. Probably the most direct access would be to park by the first restroom station at the softball fields and then follow the cinder trail to the soccer fields and branch off to the left at those fields where it becomes a dirt path. I guess that sounds confusing but pretty much every trail on the left side there will eventually lead to the stream.
