Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

How do you determine when your kids are too sick to go to activities? I have always used the no fever for 24 hour rule. DD has a cold now and sounds so stuffed(and nose runs somewhat)--but is still full tilt so while she SOUNDS awful(Stuffy-no congested cough or anything), she acts healthy and has never had a fever. WOuld you think it would be OK to take her out? I might be a little concerned as another parent seeing/hearing her try to breathe through her nose..what would you think? Most of the time my kids hae been sick they have had a fever...

DH (a doc) usually says that as long as you have symptoms you can be contagious. There are also viruses (is that the plural sp?) that "shed" for days to weeks after symptoms are gone. For example, I think I read Norwalk virus (a bad stomach) bug can hang around for up to 3 days or more infecting people after a person has stopped throwing up. Interesting, huh? Dh would be a big stickler if someone had a bad virus and was "over it" recently and we had a newborn in the house. I get to hear the "shedding" theory in those cases.

I know that dh gets annoyed when people say they are not contagious when they clearly have symptoms because he says they have no way of proving that and its probably the complete opposite! (Not to single you out ). Hope this isn't coming across rude.

So, I would say that if dd still has a ruuny nose there is the possibility of her sneezing or spreading those droplets and thus she very well may be contagious.

Also viruses can have up to a ten day course (or more).

Anyway, my 2 cents there. . .

PS We still go out with mild colds. I didn't mean to make it sound like you should hide.

However, if we were in a place that could potentially have a frail person ( newborn, immune compromised, etc.) we would probably avoid it.

For example, our kids had a mild cold this Dec. We took them to Mass but opted not to stay for the Baptism of a three day old baby since a mild cold for us could actually be RSV for him.

Sarah, you were not rude at all...
I would probably be a little more strict for a stomach bug , they scare me. You just never know if they are really "done" for a few days and why go out and risk, well, you know....
It seems EVERYONE is out and about with their stuffy noses and coughs now At church on Sunday I could not believe what the people around me sounded like....probably where dd picked this up :)

Hey Anne! I go by the color of the discharge for stuffy noses. If it is clear or whitish and there are no other symptoms (cough, fever, etc.) we go out. Green or yellow we stay home.

I base it mostly on how the child is acting.

I can handle minor coughs and snots in public, but nothing too painful sounding coupled with bright greens.

Often, my kids have had fevers and acted fine though... so we carry on as normal.
