Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can we talk vacuum cleaners, please? What do you use for your stairs? Mine are horrible and my Kirby is so heavy that I really can't use it. And, it doesn't do a great job unless I'm not using the right tool. Anyway, schlepping that thing up and down the stairs is hard too.

So, what do you use on your stairs?

Let me first say that I HATE VACUUM CLEANERS!!! I burned out 3 Hoovers in 2 years. My husband made the executive decision that it would be more cost-effective to just jump in with both feet and buy an Oreck. We have a cannister which I can lift as I move up the steps. It rests fairly stably on its end, which is about the width of a stair tread, although I still guard it with my leg. We have had this for about 5 years and it has been great. As my friend says, "This machine really sucks!"

Peace,
Nancy

I splurged and got an Electolux canister (I think they're called Aerus now?--not the ones you can buy at Sears or Home Depot), and it's so much lighter than the ancient one my mom had when I was growing up. I can easily hold it in one hand while cleaning the stairs. Our stairs are wood, so I'm using a hard floor attachment.
In our old house, we had carpeted stairs, and an upright Kenmore Progressive. It was a good vacuum, for the most part, but it ALWAYS tipped over when I tried to use any of the tools (ie doing the stairs). What we ended up doing was getting a Dirt Devil hand vac--all of theirs have rotating brushes, which were a must for those stairs. That worked really well.

I got fed up and had the main and upper level carpet replaced with hardwood so all I do now is Swiffer and occasionally run my little Electrolux Pronto up there. I highly recommend this course of action if one can afford it. It is SO much easier to keep clean. However, I still have carpet on the basement stairs and in the basement and I use a Kenmore Progressive canister vac that is relatively lightweight and has a thingy (sorry, I don't know what it's called) that holds it in place on the stairs while you use the stair attachment.

I wish my old upright had that "thingy!" It was downright dangerous to use it.

My trusty, 12 year-old Kenmore canister vac. It does a good job on the stairs, but it is kind of heavy. I just love it because it's been so dependable!
