I'm planning a trip up to the National Gallery of Art sometime next month. Maybe we can get together and meet around mid-morning. I figured, since the weather is so cold, it would be a great time to do an indoor field trip. I hope to meet some of you there. Let me know what days work out best for your family, and we'll coordinate it here.
God bless,

We love the National Gallery! We're fairly flexible, except on Thursdays.

Wish there was a jumping up and down icon. This is what I wanted to do, because of this exhibit...but I just checked and it's over on February 4th. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.
But I'm still interested.

I've been working on my children to get them more interested in art, mostly by reading artists' biographies and pointing out which paintings they could see in person. It's not working well. They like the bios but not the field trip idea. I'm still interested, though...maybe I can change their minds before the trip happens!

Jenn, this is what I really wanted to focus on. I want to see every painting of the Blessed Mother, and the Saints there. Of course, we'll do what you all decide. I think it should be fun
b.t.w., If you still want to see it, I'd love to meet you there before it's over.

Not meaning to go OT, but one year for All Saints Day a friend arranged for a docent (I don't know what they are really called at the National Gallery) to lead a group on a tour with a focus on saint paintings. We learned how to recognize the different saints by the symbols commonly included in paintings of them and the stories that were depicted. I mention this because it might be something of interest to those of you going, if you could call someone in advance and see if they could do something like that for you.
Peace,
Nancy

Oooh, that's right up my alley. I LOVE symbolism and the saints! Thanks, Nancy.
And to add another OT treat, my mother just had a tour of the Shrine of the Sacred Heart in DC, near the Zoo by one of the Capuchins. He explained in detail all the symbolism of this church from the 1920s. She knew I would love the tour. I thought later on if we had a Zoo trip planned we could get a tour, too.
Now, back to NGA -- did you want to see that exhibit, because time's up next weekend. Up for a trip next week?

Well, yes, but not Wed or Thurs.
Nancy, have you let your kids play on the NGA for Kids website? Just an idea.

Ha ha, do you think they'd go to an ART website???
This next week is bad for us (Tuesday is the only day we could go)...
Off topic...Jamestown, Yorktown Victory Center and Williamsburg are having Home Education days in early March. They sound cool...I think we're going. Dh can't go, so I am trying to import my history-loving friend as adult help! Check it out if you like things historical.

I'd love to join you all if I can. Mondays and Fridays are best for us, depending on the week. I can't do Wednesdays and would have to be back by 3 on Tues. or Thurs. (And my 4yo would have to miss Atrium on a Tues for us to go.)
Nancy- do you have a link for the homeschooling info for Jamestown/Yorktown/Williamsburg?

Tuesday of next week sounds good to me. I, too, have to be back by 3:00. I am still planning on going again in February, for those of you who would like to join us, but can;t make it this month. You can PM me for my phone number to set it up for Tuesday.
God bless,

I want to go, too, but my days are just too crazy to even consider getting a field trip in. What I am hoping, though, is that DH and I can get down to see the diptych exhibit on Sunday for my birthday. The Flemish painters from that time period are my absolute favorites.
I hope that all of you who get to go together have a wonderful time!
Peace,
Nancy

I'm afraid I can't do this coming Tuesday, Ruth. I was thinking more of your original idea of going in Feb. I talked to Mary Chris today and she's interested in going with a group if possible, but she cannot do Tuesdays. How do Mondays look in late Feb. or early March for a possible second trip? (But not President's Day Monday.)

Irene, I'm sorry you can't make it on Tuesday. Mondays in Feb sound great. Let's plan on it, maybe the last week in Feb, or the begining of March. I'll let you know how it goes this Tuesday.
God bless.
