Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anyone here been through this? My dad is 87 years old and came to live with me shortly after my mom passed away in 97'. He's been in and out of the hospital in the last few years with a trip to rehab before coming home each time. He came down with pneumonia last month and has now been in rehab for several weeks. We just had a meeting with the staff and he's not doing as well as in the past. They are going to be discharging him from the physical therapy portion of things and we need to make a decision soon. He will be needing 24 hour care, which is something that I cannot provide and it is breaking my heart. I can't even think straight at the moment on what steps to take next.

I'm thinking that St. Joseph is a good one to intercede for us...anyone else?

Essy, you have given your father love and care for many years. If you are unable to give him 24 hour care, as he needs now, be at peace with entrusting him to others who can give him the care you cannot at this time. Pray and trust that the Lord has your father, and your family, in His tender care and that He will truly guide whatever lies ahead for all of you. Praying for all your intentions, especially for wisdom and peace in all your concerns.

Thank you Servant, those were the exact words that I needed to hear at this moment.

I don't have any experience with this (yet), but I wanted to let you know that I will be praying for you while you discern. I know this can be trying, but 'ditto' to what Servant said!

I have not had experience with this either but I do know that the Bible says that when we do not know what to pray that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us. I also know in Matthew 6:33 it says to Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you. Seek Him with your concerns. Cry out to him. He will hear you and will answer you.

No experience or advice here, Essy. Just lots of prayers for you and your dad.

Dear Essy,
You and your father are in my thoughts and prayers.
I heartily concur with Servant. You have been there for your father and you still are. You will have no regrets or anything to look back on in years to come.

I went through this three years ago this month, but as a daughter-in-law instead of as daughter. I was able to look at the whole situation from a slightly different angle, but I was still the primary caregiver during the time we cared for PawPaw in our home before placing him in a nursing home. I know it was a heart-wrenching decision for my husband to make.

Now, three years later, we (my dh and I) are at peace with our decision and know it was the best for everyone...including PawPaw.

In a perfect utopia, our ideal would work the way we'd like it to. But we don't live in utopia. So the best we can do is what we can do.

Your father will never forget the utopia you gave him during these past years. What a beautiful witness for a daughter you are.

Essy, we will be praying for you in your discernment. I remember my mother going through this with her mother. It was a very hard decision on the entire family, but in the end, my grandmother was happier in a nursing home than she was being shuttled around between all of her children.
