I don't want to repeat what I've written in my blog. But I do want to know whether other people out there go through a sort of mourning for their pets (even the exacerbating ones). Please read about her, if interested, here.

Tina -
She was part of your life for FIFTEEN YEARS! She was a helpless animal who was totally dependent on your kindness and generosity. Losing her IS A BIG DEAL!
After our 12 year old Scottie died, I cried every time I saw a Scottie for years. Of course we have another Scottie now, but there are still times I think about the other one and tear up.
Maybe I'm crazy, or have my emotions out of balance or something, but I TOTALLY understand that this is a very hard time for you, and I do think it's pretty normal.
Peace,
Nancy

Tina, first of all, I am so sorry for your loss. Your feelings are completely understandable and normal. We have cats and love them dearly; over the past year and a half we've had to put down two of them. (We have three remaining - they will all be 16 this spring.)
Last summer I wrote about losing our Patty. It was so devastating. I was not myself for days before and after.
Take time to grieve, Tina. It is a testament to how well you cared for Little. What a wonderful gift you gave her - a long and happy life.

Tina, I am so sorry. It is very sad to loose a pet like Little who has been a part of your family for so long.
We had a simular experience a few years ago when we had to have our cat, Shadow, put to sleep. She was our first pet and had been with us through moves, new babies, new pets. Many of the situations that you described with Little caused me to nod my head, "yes, that happened here as well."
Her diet began to fall off. I tried everything to get her to eat. My dd, Avery (who wants to be a vet someday) went with me to the vet. He told me respiratory as well. Lots of money in testing and probably could not save her. He rarely puts down animals, but that was his recommendation. Oh how I cried as she fell asleep so peacefully. At least she was out of her pain.
So know that even though Little many have been a thorn in your side (at least at times), she still was a part of your family and you have every right to grieve over the loss of this pet.

I'm so sorry about your cat Tina. I think it is completely normal to grieve for a beloved pet that has passed. I remember one time when I was first married, my cat that my mother had given me as a teenager got sick and died suddenly and I was heart broken. So I totally understand. I hope you feel better soon.

The strange thing is that toward the end of her life, I not only didn't feel a whole lot of love for her, but I was actually repulsed by her. The URI made her nose and eyes drain and crust. Her thinness sickened me because she was so fat before and now all sorts of extra skin just sagged. I hope this is not a foreshadowing of the way my kids feel about me during my last few days. We brought her along on all of our travels with the military because my daughter would've been heartbroken had Little not stayed with us. I guess it was the responsibility that lay on my shoulders today ... the decision I had to make ... that really saddened me. It is so grave when one has to decide to take another's life. I was praying so fervently last night that she would just die without having to be euthanised. It would've been easier for me to accept. At least I think it would.

Tina -
This past summer we had to put my cat Meaghan down. She had started urinating outside of her litter box and throwing up blood. I called the vet and they told me not to worry about the blood . We finally brought her in because she wasn't eating and still throwing up blood. They did some x-rays and found out she was riddled with cancer. I had to make the call right there on the spot and of course my husband was at work. We went back in the afternoon together as a family so the kids (read ME) could say good-bye. Meaghan didn't really want to go though. She squirmed so much during the first IV insertion that as I was looking in her eyes and saying good-bye, the vet said, "It's not working". Are you kidding me??? They inserted the IV again and tried to inject her again. The IV STILL wasn't in correctly. This time she fell asleep, it just took a lot longer than it normally would. She was a fighter to the end
It is tough having to make that decision. I totally understand what you are going through, and yes, there is a mourning period - Little was part of your family.
