I have searched the department stores (only JCPenney and Sears have maternity departments in my neck of the woods) looking for a nice nursing nightgown for the hospital and beyond...I am no stranger to a badly designed nursing gown--in fact, the last four pregnancies, I have bought a new gown each time but they were all variations of the same design--knee length knit floral with white background...nursing slits that don't stay closed--and oh yes, a measly little silk bow at the top--they all come with a lightweight robe that matches--after one washing (and I NEVER dried them), they go all funny and shrink up and the hem twists--the nursing slits become obscene and do not stay closed--can you tell I'm on a rant?
Here's an example of the gown I hate:

I had a friend who told me that she once had a nursing gown with the nursing openings hidden under a flap of material--sort of like this nursing pajama set. Like Michele and Lisa mentioned in the modesty/boots/cold weather thread, nursing clothes are becoming obscene--I mean I found a lot of nursing nightgowns which were indecent and were considered nursing because you could just pull the material down for easy access!!   What about modesty in a hospital setting? I would do pajamas but I like to get a shower asap after birth and the nurses do like to check me periodically--so pj's are out, but a nightgown works so well!
Okay, can you tell I'm obsessing--any good tips for my dream gown--I know there are others out there who could benefit, right? I have two weeks until my due date, so help and quick! I need to get my bag packed!

My favorite nursing clothing comes from motherwear.com They no longer sell my gown, but there's a very pretty gown & robe on clearance now.

I tried to find a nursing gown I liked before my last little one was born, and never did find what I wanted. I ended up with one of the Motherwear gown/robe sets, but bought it a size larger so it wouldn't do the open slit thing after I washed it.I found some pajamas I like for home, where I can just lift the top, but for the hospital, a gown is easier. A friend had good luck finding a couple of nice, modest gowns on eBay.

You crack me up, Jennifer. The "yucky nursing gown" that you linked to is the gown I received as a Christmas present...and UNFORTUNATELY I do not have a gift receipt.
I have been disgusted with both the maternity and nursing attire during this pregnancy. I think I've come to the point in which 2 piece pajama sets will have to do. At least they are modest, even if they aren't as feminine as a gown.

What a frustrating dilemma! The variety and quality of nursing clothing is really pathetic lately!
Have you checked a local consignment or thrift shop? A few of the childrens thrift shops around here carry maternity/nursing wear also. I found a nice nursing gown there last year for $2.00, it seems it was handmade, I didn't recognize the style nor did it have a label. Just a thought. Hope you find something!

Even if you do not have a gift reciept, most stores take their items back for store credit if they have the store or garment brand tag attached - especially right after Christmas. By the sounds of things, there is not much at Motherhood to exchange for these days. You may only get the last sale price, but maybe you could exchange it for a nursing bra.. they must have some of those.
FWIW, when I was shopping for a nursing set to take to the hospital for my last two deliveries (3 & 5 years ago), I could not find anything in the shops that I liked. I found a simple white cotton set that was new with tags on eBay (for a great price, too!) Many moms who choose not to or cannot nurse will resell or consign their unused nursingwear.

Can you link to the gown? I didn't see it on their website--I did see some gowns with the "push aside" to nurse openings--fine for nightime in your own home but not appropriate for the hospital! What has happened to Motherwear?

There is a consignment store near my home that sells baby clothes/items--I'll check there--maybe they have maternity items...it's been a few years since I checked them out!

If I don't find anything else, I'll trade you--your gown for me (so I don't have to order the yucky thing) and I promise to find you a nice one before your big day--the "yucky nursing gown" does okay in the hospital--as long as you wear the robe--but I always get so hot--I never want to keep the robe on!

Because I've not seen or been able to afford nightgowns I would actually wear, I resort to the non-nursing long nightgowns with button-down fronts (the buttons usually go far down enough for me). If it were a hospital setting, I might consider topping it with a pull-over shirt if I thought it necessary. At home, I use a blanket when needed.

I've casually eyed the gowns here before. Pricey though when I've got things on hand that work, and a little frilly for me (maybe they'd make it without the ruffle?). Warning: It is not a Catholic site.

My new favorite nursing gown is a little pricey, but I LOVE the comfort. I ordered this gown and my husband bought me the lounge pajamas for Christmas - I've been living in them ever since.

Even worse a lot of the nursing DRESSES are like this now. I mean, c'mon . . . short of taking my dress or top completely OFF I really I can't think of a less discrete design for nursing.
For a really nice (pricey) nightgown try this.
I bought a dress by this maker for my DD's baptism last year and was pretty skeptical about the design because it looked to me like it would fall down, but it doesn't and is far and away my favorite nursing dress ever.

Thanks, everyone for all the site links! I like the one you linked to a lot, Sara, but even if you convert to USD, the gown is $67!!! But, it is exactly what I was looking for--a nursing opening under a flap for modesty...Hmmm...I think I need to go back to sleep and maybe I'll figure this all out in the morning!
