Remember when New Year's Eve was a big deal? Dressing up, stepping out, ringing in the New Year?
So, how do you celebrate it now? Do you go out, get a sitter, or do the kids stay up and drink sparkling cider with you?
Our 15 yr old just left to go to a party. (Yes, I contacted the parents involved and have been assured of it being well supervised by lots of Catholic parents.) So here we are, with some very wound up little ones. We have some snacks and cider, but other than that, nothing particularly special or memorable. We don't even have tv to watch the ball drop at Times Square!

Board games and paper dolls are our tradition! It is going to be a long, but hopefully fun, night!

We went out to dinner, then to Mass where my son served at the altar and now home. I'm going to make chocolate fondue for fun and a coffee cake for the morning and we're going to let the children stay up as long as they can.

We were heading to a friend's house, but her youngest is feverish, so we are home.
But, Libby has a guest over--a very accomplished trombonist. The two of them have been playing Bach chorales all evening, and, though unusual, it has been a surprisingly beautiful and celebratory combination.
The kids made chips and guacamole, salsa, dips...cousins will come over, we'll watch Star Trek .
Happy New Year, Molly and everyone!

Planning a viewing of the BBC Pride and Prejudice here! A "bean feast" for dinner (everyone scrounges for their favorite snacky foods) and then our date with Colin Firth. I mean Jane Austen!

Lots of appetizers of their choosing, casino games, sparkling cider, ESPN Scene-it and then ESPN Monopoly.
(But I think I'll probably nod off while reading and nursing.)

I just made turkey tortilla soup!
I'm going to make Dawn's Lemon Snowballs - check out her blog for the recipe and we'll have tea and snacks and who knows how much soup!
I have 4 bottles of sparkling cider to go through....
We have to go return some movies and we'll pick up some more...Juliana's favorite is the new Pride and Prejudice - don't you love that an almost 9 year old has this kind of taste?
We watched The Never Ending Story today - Steve was supposed to be home tonight but he won't be making it so we'll just hang out, play games, snack and watch movies.
We'll say our rosary and the Chaplet, too.
Happy New Year everyone! May 2007 be the best yet for all of you!

We're recuperating, so I'm going off to sleep in a bit and wake up for the ball drop and a sip of champagne at midnight. My martial arts fanatics are watching Fearless (Jet Li) right now
No special food, though I may try a bite of the chocolate fruitcake and see if it's good (boozed) enough. Leftovers will have to do as everyone was sick this year, no energy to cook. We do have Aisa's rumballs.
Argh too much alcohol -- are they bad or good for sinuses? I've heard conflicting info.
Nighty night and happy new year all!!!

We picked our patron saints for 2007 before the kids headed off for an early bedtime. Chinese food for dh and I as a "date" while we watched a movie, now we are up with a sick 3 year old and will probably wake the oldest two right before midnight. I think I'd rather go to bed!
Happy New Year everyone!

We just got home from having dinner at friends' house. They are my youngest's godparents, a Catholic, homeschooling family with six kids. I love them to pieces, and they recently told us that they'll be moving soon. We are heartbroken about that, but I can't help but be full of joy in God's plan. We have been truly blessed by their friendship in the few years that we have known them. They are eternal members of our family.
All of our kids are in bed after a full night of PS2 and dress-up. Now, I'm off to ring in the New Year with my sweet hubby!

I've been panicking about our education plans for the next year. It's nearly eleven here, and I'm still on the computer agonizing over Greek myth books. Fun.

Yay, Jennifer! You agonize, then share with us. I have yet to get our Greek plans done -- it's been on my list for weeks. Ugh.

Dh worked this afternoon/evening, so I took the kids a few miles away to where some of the floats for the Rose Parade were being transported to the starting point for tomorrow. There were 6-7 floats, and it was fun to get a sneak peek. The kids were most impressed. Afterwards, we met some friends (my youngest's godparents and their kids) at a greasy burger joint for dinner.
Now dh is home and the kids are in their sleeping bags on the living room floor watching recorded shows and trying to keep their eyes open

We went to mass. Greeted our friends and neighbors, and wished our priest a Happy New Year (Father Michalicka recently recovered from surgery). Came home and served appetizers--meatballs, pot stickers, chip and dip, etc. My dh made margaritas (his favorite lately). We settled in for a night of movies.
But alas, our oldest ds is exhausted--too much activity in his life lately. And our youngest dd is not feeling well. So two of the three children are in bed, sound asleep. My dh just turned on Star Trek.
And Jennifer I am with you--panicking over next years education plans.
Happy New Year to you all!

Oh my goodness, well, we didn't do a whole lot. We get up too early to ring in the new year at midnight!
The boys went to bed at their regular time with prayers and a promise that at midnight they might wake to hear bells and fireworks. Bill and I stayed up a bit later than usual and watched the Patriots game we had recorded. (We won! )
Today we will do our celebrating! I'll be cooking a pot roast in the slow cooker for dinner and making some cookies (lemon snowballs, too, Maria!). I'm also cooking crabbies and artichoke dip and we'll let the kids have some ginger ale for toasting. We'll probably watch a parade, and maybe The Swiss Family Robinson.
The boys will make egg-carton bells and we'll write down our family wishes for the new year. We'll talk about the World Day of Peace. We will pray especially to Our Blessed Mother. I made a few special votives for her last night - we'll have them lit all day.
And last, but not least, I am tweaking our home learning plans for the new year! Hope to have them ironed out later today!
May God bless you all in this beautiful new year!

Hate to hijack, but I have four weeks of multi-level Ancient Greece plans in a Word document that are just waiting for me to blog them this week. You pray I get the computer time, and they're all yours!

Elizabeth, I'm praying!
We didn't make it to midnight here, still recovering from our first illness in 4-5 years. I forgot how wiped out you feel afterwards. But I did wake up at midnight as the Cuban family across the basin had the best fireworks. I didn't even have to move out of my bed, the hatch was open and they were firing right over the boat! Their live band was pretty groovy too, but the fact that I could fall asleep while they were playing at an ungodly volume for hours past midnight tells me just how tired I was!
