Hello, lovely bloggers! I need to alert you to some changes in the Webring, and it may be that it has outgrown its usefulness and should be retired altogether. Our blog circle has grown by leaps and bounds in the past year! It's wonderfully exciting, and I always get a little thrill when someone announces she has begun a new blog. I wish I could BEGIN to keep up with them all, but we all know how impossible that is!
We've had many new members join the webring in the past couple of months. As I mentioned in a post just before my California move, managing the webring has become quite time-consuming, and I honestly can't spare the time anymore. (I know, I know, it was my idea in the first place--but that was when my hubby worked at home!! I have far less computer time now and I must reserve it for writing.)
Since no one was able to answer my call for volunteers over the summer, I think it's best if we either 1) let the webring go entirely (with my sincere apologies to the ladies who have worked to get their code in place during recent weeks) or 2) leave it up, but know that no one is managing it, new members won't be added, etc.
One argument in favor option 1 is that the ring isn't actually functioning properly right now. There are many breaks in the chain--for example, many of the Blogger blogs that switched to Blogger Beta have lost their ring code. Don't anyone feel bad--I discovered MY blog was missing its code too! At some point I overhauled my sidebars and forgot to move the code into the new typelist.
Also, anyone who joined in the first wave has the wrong URL in their code for the ring's home page. If your code says "http://melissawiley.typepad.com/reallearningwebring," that's incorrect; it should read "http://ebeth.typepad.com/reallearningwebring/."
Getting all the code squared away promises to be a massive time drain, which is why I think we may need to just acknowledge that it was fun while it lasted but it's time to move on. Realistically, I doubt many people are using the webring to navigate through our sites anyway. Much more useful would be an updated blogroll file people could import into Bloglines. My own sub list is woefully out of date!
For now I'm adding a message to the ring site that says membership is currently closed. I'll leave the ring itself in place for now, but I won't be able to do any management at all. If anyone feels like taking the reins, by all means let me know!
Warmly,

Thank you Lissa for managing the ring as long as you did and with all the massive demands upon your time!

Lissa,
Thanks for all the work you've done. I think no one has volunteered because if YOU say it's complicated and time consuming and you're a computer whiz, well...think of how long it would take for the rest of us!
I'll just manually add a blogroll to my site when I have a chance. Wish I had a drop-in code for blogspirit, but I can do it.

Lissa (or anyone ):
I have the "little box" on my blog, but would like to add the "list"....with the actual blog link on it. can i still do this? is this the "drop in code" Jenn is talking about?
And, then when there is a new blog, from now on, I'd add it manually?

Lissa
I just found this, so do you want me to disregard my email and do as Jenn suggested? In many ways I like all the names up anyway

Erin, I know that no one has updated the actual "list" that Lissa was talking about.
I am doing the webring admininstration that Lissa used to do -- but those are some really big shoes to fill!
I could compile a new list, but it is even harder to keep that up than it is to keep the ring up.
Personally, on my blog I have a list of the sites I visit the most, and I also have the ring code. I like seeing the names.
Also, at this time there are only 58 blog names in the ring. I would love to see more blogs in it, but no one is applying! And as people change their blog software, they are forgetting about the ring.

Paula
when you say the ring code do you mean the webring, the one with next, previous next five etc? I have put that up but it is saying I am not approved so won't link. I did just re-apply with my new blog address (BTW I emailed Lissa that I made a mistake so one of the applications was a typo error and also I never did finish putting up my other site so there are two not needed ) So can I get the ring code to work?
I enjoy seeing the names myself. I was just worried I might offend some-one if I miss them.

I sent you a pm about the ring.
My email is lpaula@frontiernet.net if you (or anyone on the boards!) has a question about the ring.
Thanks!
