Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

How much (if at all) do you respond to comments in your blog? Someone recently posted a comment in response to an entry where I briefly linked to a news item on adoption by homosexual couples. The commenter wanted me to justify my opposition to it...

My view is that it's my blog and I'll say what I want to! I don't want to have a lengthy ding-dong in the comments. It's not an apologetics blog.

What do others do about this? I'm inclined to leave it be (and maybe add a disclaimer in the sidebar along the lines of, Read my blog if you like it and if you don't, there's a great big internet out there!).

Elizabeth,

Take this with a grain of salt because I don't even have a blog.

There are three options I can think of.... ignore it, delete it, or respond. If you don't feel you need to justify your entry, then ignore it.
(Delete it if it was rude.)

If the person insists by commenting again, I would attempt to block that person. That's just me though.

So far, I've been blessed with kind comments.
With the exception of one, which I deleted.
If it bothers you, delete it or simply say what you wrote here - "It's my blog and I'll blog it if I want to!"

I don't have lengthy discussions in comments, although I often reply in some short way.

Word press has the option of not allowing comments on any post or all posts, or you can make it so comments have to be approved first.

I would presume he is sincere in asking for information though unless it is obvious they are just "poking the fire". I try to assume the best as much as I can.

I did not set up my blog for apologetics. I know some people like to discuss or have controversy, but it eats me up. I would just delete the comment or block the person. Chances are they just want to debate.

I have only once had a semi-negative comment, when I said something about the supposed "female priests" not being real priests and their "masses" being invalid. But I think that person was trying to engage in real dialog, versus just being a troll out looking for trouble. I did respond by saying basically "lets agree to disagree" and it worked well. I think if the comment had been more negative or trollish I would have deleted it. Like Jenn, conflict really eats me up and I can't deal with it well, so I avoid it when I can.

I've only had one negative comment. When I posted my St. Nicholas Unit someone left a multi-paragraph comment complaining how the Polish traditions were all off. Apparently it was sacreligious to say that he brought apples instead of oranges? The funny thing is that she was arguing with a link to the St. Nicholas Resource Center, so the content that she disagreed with wasn't even mine. I just deleted the dissertation (I mean comment) and didn't allow myself to get upset.

I think some people are looking for an argument and I think the worst thing you can do is to take the bait. Quite honestly, IMHO, the moment blogging becomes a stress or an unpleasant experience and ceases to be the joy that it should be, that's the moment I will pull the plug. Life is too short. Thank God for the delete button.

I haven't had any negative comments so far - one spammy one which I deleted. It's your blog and you don't have to address it. If you are on Typepad, you can even restrict the person from further comments if there is follow up trouble. It's not a forum for debate, unless you want it to be.
