Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I really want to learn how to sew on a sewing machine, so I'm asking for one for Christmas. My husband seems to think this would be a reasonable present. But I have no idea what exactly to ask for!

Can any of you recommend a good machine for someone who is a complete beginner? I want to learn to sew clothes eventually -- simple skirts, aprons, dresses, that kind of thing. I'd also like to be able to sew things around the house, like pillows, simple curtains, that kind of thing.

Also, can anyone recommend a good book or tutorial on sewing with the machine?

I'll ask on my sewing list and get back to you, BUT in my experience the best way to learn is to just play with the machine. Get familiar with the feel of it, the stitches it can do etc. and then (and this is really important in my opinion) joing a sewing group (in real life or online) because the support and inspiration you will get will be a huge help in building your confidence and honing your skills.

A good machine for a beginner is a basic machine. i persoanlly like Kenmores. They are inexpensive and reliable.

Good luck and yell if you need help!
