Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Someone, in one of the threads going about skirts etc., asked about knee high socks. Since I actually have 2 sock questions I figured I'd start a new post.

First of all, knee high socks; I cannot find any! I used to be able to get them at K-mart, Wal-mart etc. I went looking last week and no one has them!. I do not like tights (I can't stand to wear them) and my knee highs are getting thin. . .plus my black ones have disappeared. I can find them online but the prices are a bit high for socks and then shippping. . . Anyone have any ideas? I suppose I could go look around the mall but. . . ugh! not at this time of year!

Another sock question; my 2 yr. old is VERY particular about touch. He cannot stand socks or slippers with anything that feels funny (seams, threads etc.) It's getting very cold here and his little toes are always freezing. Any suggestions??

Thanks!

Michele,

I have purchased long knees socks at Marshall's and TJ Maxx. Actually most of my tights, socks and hosiery come from those stores. I usually find them with the red tags on clearance, too, as their stock is always changing. Much of their items are department store overstocks so it depends on what was in the big stores in the recent past. When I lived in California and Maryland the Ross store was similar.

I once had a friend whose son was annoyed by seams on his socks. His problem was solved by wearing his socks inside out. Just a thought.

Blessings,

Oh TJ Maxx - I didn't think to look there! And it's right next to JoAnn's where dh is taking me today anyway because my dressform just came in!

Thanks!

Dallas Shoe Warehouse (DSW) had a nice selection of knee highs when I was there a couple of weeks ago.

My oldest has sensory issues as well and would only wear these sheepskin slippers until he was six or seven.

HTH,

No Dallas Shoe Warehouses here I'm afraid. But I did find ONE pair at TJ Maxx. They're black and since they are wool, cashmere and angora they will be cozy and warm!

Thanks for the inside out idea on the socks Kristina. I'll have to try that!

Since you're avoiding the stores, I won't recommend any. I've bought knee-his on clearance through Lands End.

Blaaahhhh....you're kidding? Isn't that frustrating when basic clothing items aren't available?

Target had knee highs a few weeks ago.
My dh is also a picky sock person....and he sometimes will wear the socks inside out, so I second that idea.

The department stores do have them here....jcp, macy's, but again......THE MALL! what about jcp catalogue?

For your 2-year-old, what about those plushy-soft-lounge socks. I don't know the name, but they feel like cashmere, very soft. someone gave some to my girls and me last year for christmas, and I don't feel the seams in them. just a thought.

Target has more knee highs than you can shake a stick at. I've also seen them at Kohl's.

Well I guess I should check Target. We have one but it's a bit farther out than the other stores. I'll probably wait until after I have the baby because I'm just not up to shopping right now. Kohl's I like too but they're at the mall and oh it's so awful there. Parking is terrible now - and the lines! Of ocurse I am sure target is similar. I have enough socks to last until after Christmas anyway so I think I'll wait and hit the after Chirstmas sales.

Thanks for all the ideas ladies!

I can't stand tights either.

I bought some cable knee high socks a few years ago from Vermont Country Store-mail order.

They are pretty thick, though.

I also used to get some from Hannah Andersson, but not sure if they have them still. (I'm not much help without providing links )

Better go. . .

Michele... perfect time to practise your knitting on a sock You can knit your son some seamless socks... and they are pretty basic... just a lot of knitting, a few decreases and short rows in SOME instances

Edited just to correct spelling

So do you find that knee-highs and trouser socks reliably stay pulled up? When I was a schoolgirl trying to obey the rule about keeping socks pulled up I was constantly having to adjust them.

I'm so glad this thread came up because I was just having a similar problem. I bought four new not-so-cheap skirts a couple of months ago. I am overweight and not likely to "tempt" anyone but (probably as a direct result of reading this board) modesty concerns had still made me change my wardrobe -- before the new skirts, to mostly wearing the ugliest, baggiest pants I have because though they were unfeminine nothing else was "wrong" with them. I only had a couple of skirts in circulation that just weren't great for everyday wear.

Tights all day felt oppressive though so I looked at trouser socks and knee-highs the last time I was at a store that had them, but I couldn't be sure what really went with the kind of skirts I now have (not so fancy, but not denim or otherwise clearly casual, all well below the knee) and I didn't want to waste $ experimenting so I'm still going between skirts/tights and ugly baggy pants. Even the socks/knee-highs that looked most stocking-like and should certainly go with skirts I'd normally wear with stockings, I wasn't sure would not fall down all the time.

Theresa,

My new socks stayed up all day yesterday without help but I do have a trick that I use to keep up the ones that like to fall down up. Glue. Really. My dd's are Irish step dancers and I learned that they use glue sticks to keep their socks up and it works!. Honestly it's not as gross as it sounds. You can use regular glue stick and you only need a little bit and it washes right off at the end of the day. If you don't want to use a regular glue stick you can buy "sock glue" but it's pricey or you can use fabric glue stick from the fabric store but really even the cheap stuff from Staples is non-toxic and water soluable. Oh and if you want to go really cheap make your own with a sugar and water paste.

Hope this helps!
