I am looking for a good charity to donate to this Christmas as our Christmas gifts to several friends. A few years ago my sister donated to Heifer Int. as her gift to us and we really liked this. I have a friend who is a Carmelite and who's special "cause" is the elderly. She has no desire for material things but I would like to give to some charity in her name. Can any of you help me out with good places to do so? And if there are any who specialize in the elderly, that would be even better! Thanks so much!

We donate to St. Joseph's Mission Fund. It is a charitable organization that helps provide basic necessities to the poor in the southern region of India. The donations are sent to Virginia and are then forwarded to Fr. Joseph Swam in India (he visited our parish a few years ago). They have orphanages, medical clinics, an old age home, etc., along with training programs and other services. Every dollar donated to St. Joseph's Mission Fund goes directly to the poor because those helping are doing so as volunteers. The address for donations is:
St. Joseph's Mission Fund
8705 Falkstone Lane
Alexandria, VA 22309-4004
Their website is under construction, but should eventually be located at, wwww.sjmissionfund.org (there are 4 w's, it is not a typo).

Does your diocese have a crisis pregnancy center? That is always a worthy charity to support. As far as charities for the elderly, I'm not sure.

Katherine,
Our diocese does not have one, but our town does and both our good friend and our family have already done a bunch of things this year for them as a part of our newly formed Sanctity of Life Committee (as a matter of fact we are setting up a box at the local Food Lion this Thursday to collect diapers, wipes and formula for them) so I wanted to do something that would not seem as if it was an offshoot of the Committee, KWIM?
Also she is a professor of nursing specializing in geriatrics and we have not done as much with the end of life issues yet so wanted to do something on that end so she would know we truly do know what is dear to her.
For our other friends/family though, it would be a good idea to make a donation to them or the ones in their own towns! Thanks for the reminder. Sometimes I can't see the answer right in front of my face!

Katherine,
It's funny you just posted here as I just came back from gleaning ideas for Advent (late start, I know!) on your blog! I love your blog and ideas! Wow!

We donate to Food For the Poor, Inc. It is a Christian Organization, very reputable- about 96% of donations go to the poor.
We like it because you can give ten chickens or a cow, etc in the name of a friend or relative for Christmas. You can also "adopt" an orphan.
This has been a powerful lesson for my kids- seeing how poor children around the world live.
