What kind of dishes do you use? Do you like them? I NEED new dishes. I WANT a few other things for Christmas, but I NEED dishes. So, I guess that's what I'm getting. But I have no clue what kind to get. My MIL swears by Corelle. They are nice it seems - especially for kids to use. I've had stoneware for years and have really liked them, but we're down to 5 plates and there are 6 of us (and maybe 7 in about 9 months)! I think it's time to get something new. Any suggestions?

Well, I'm no help because I use stoneware -- Pfaltzgraff. I like it, but I only have one child, so I can monitor plate use very well.
I have heard good things about Corelle, too. Nicer looking than Melamine but still durable.
ETA: Whoa, just caught the pregnancy reference ... are congratulations in order?

We use Arcoroc, non-breakable, chip-resistant, microwavable, dishwasher safe, looks like 'real' dishes! Click on the picture to enlarge, this is my pattern though I guess they come in many others.

We use Correlle - and they hold up fairly well. But I will say that they still do break. We just had to purchase bowls because we were down to just a few with 8 family members.

We just switched to Corelle after 9 years of using Pfalzgraf. They're much more resistant to chips, less expensive to replace, and they take up a lot less room in the cabinet. Janet's right when she says that they do still break. It's usually pretty rare, but when it happens, LOOK OUT!! Millions of sharp little shards of Corelle all over the floor. 
It's been rare enough in my experience to make the other benefits outweigh the breakage.

Congrats!!
We usually buy a large set of whatever is on sale every few years.  Two years ago we bought a very large set for $30 at K-Mart. It was a service for 8 and included dinner plates, salad plates, bowls, saucers, mugs, and napkin rings. They hold up pretty well and they are inexpensive enough that if they break it isn't a big deal. We have a hodge podge of mixed matched plates, bowls, and cups.
The dishes that hold up best for littles are Tupperwear but you have to follow the guidelines for microwaving. Ours look terrible because the kids just throw everything in the microwave without looking to see which ones are supposed to go in.
SOMEDAY , when the kids are older, I hope to have a really nice set of China.

First of all, Becky, congratulations!!! Wonderful news!
Secondly, we use our Mikasa all the time, and it has held up great through 13 years of marriage and three boys (so far)! The pattern and color lend themselves to any season so it's fun to match them with other smaller sets (like Christmas china and such).

I've only had half the married years and 1/3 of Dawn's children, but we have Mikasa ITALIAN Countryside and I agree with Dawn. It dresses up and down, I have Christmas china that I use with it...and it seems pretty durable. I only have a few chips so far with daily wear.
I don't like Corelle because it's so thin. And the plates heat up really fast, especially if you use in the oven or microwave, so you can't hold them.

We presently use (for older children & adults) some Martha Stewart clearance plates we bought several years ago. Though, I've been wanting to switch to polycarbonate (?) or whatever the right term is for the kind that has the properties Jenn mentioned (not ceramic, but unbreakable, microwaveable, etc.). I am a little concerned about switching over to a clear-ish plates with our no-dishwasher house (re: water spots). We've not bothered switching, as we're already blessed with what we've got; but, this other kind is in our minds for the future.

Congratulations! What wonderful news.
We use Fiesta. But I too, am looking for new dishes. I never had a full set, and some of them have broken over the last several years. And of course, my mil blessed me with some Christmas dishes (the one with the tree on the front). I use them thoroughout Advent and Christmas. Guess I better pull them out of the cabinet!

Congratulations!!!! We use Fiesta too, but for lunches and stuff the kids use plastic we got during the summer at Target for patio use (I guess), but they work pretty well for daily kid use.

Congratulations!!! How exciting!
No suggestions on dishes. I used to buy sets but now I buy by the piece when they go on sale just because I love so many different designs and can't afford/don't have room for them all! I do keep one nice set of china for special dinners.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! I LOVE the Mikasa but I'm afraid I would want to protect it so much I'd put it in my china cabinet and have to go and buy another set of dishes for everyday! We're really hard on dishes around here it seems. However, I just recalled that we have a Mikasa Outlet not too far away, so maybe if I can find a set really cheap I wouldn't feel that way. I guess I'll have to go shopping! I enjoyed reading what everyone uses. The Arcoroc looks really interesting. I had never heard of it before.
Thanks also, for the congratulations. DH and I haven't told many people yet, well, except ALL of you ladies , I have to admit I'm a little apprehensive. I know our homeschool friends will be supportive but I am 42 (yes, that first number is a 4)and I know our family and other "friends" will have lots of weird looks and questions. I'm praying for the right words and attitude - don't want to sound defensive off the bat, but don't want to sound apologetic either. But, I guess this is a completely different thread!
Anyway, thanks for all the ideas. I'm going to have fun shopping for dishes!

Becky -
I was a couple weeks shy of 42 when my youngest dd was born. She just turned 11; so I'm turning (you can add) in a couple more weeks.
I am much *younger* than almost anyone else I know who is my chronological age, but I bring a more experienced perspective to parenting, which makes being Mom to this little girl more a pleasure than ever.
Don't worry -- it's exciting news!
