I am in need of some new nursing bras and I have no idea where to get good ones. The one's I got rid of after baby #4 were from baby #1, so I really needed some new ones. I can't spend a lot of money on them but I want comfortable ones. Preferably not underwire. Where does everyone get their's? Thanks

God bless,
Jess

I buy mine at motherwear.com. If you can find a local boutique with someone trained in fitting bras, it is worth it. You would pay more, but you could just buy one there and then order some online.

You can also get them at Motherhood stores.

I have used these for the last several years. I don't know if anyone carries them besides wal-mart. They are lightweight, not restictive (no underwire), and provide easy access when needed. I know a lot of sports bras are very tight and binding--these are not.
I'm not well-endowed, so these do provide an appropriate amound of support for me.

I have been wearing bras from Decent Exposure for the past 5 years. They aren't cheap ($30-40) but I only get one/year, and after a baby is born, I have some other less expensive ones too, but these are by far the most comfortable and most supportive.

They are GREAT! So comfortable!

Hi Mary,
The link above only brought me to Bravado's main home page. Were you trying to link to the The Lifestyle Microfiber Nursing Bra? ($39) That one looks like exactly what I would want. (Seamless, no underwire, yet good support.) I wish it wasn't so expensive!

Jess,

In my experience the bra you like the most will depend on two main things; your size and the look you want (which can also be affected by size). I would think we all want comfort but if you are a larger size you may find that some bras won't give you the support and look you want.
For example I have tried the Bravado bras and while they are comfortable they're not enough support for me and they give me a "matronly" look under my clothes which makes me look heavier. Uh. . . no thanks.

My personal favorite bras are these from Leading Lady. They do have underwires but I take those out (takes just a few seconds to remove them).

Also keep in mind that different bras have different hooks for nursing access and some are easier than others.     Personally I prefer the ones I can do with one hand. The LL bras are like that.

God bless!

Wal-Mart and Target have very comfortable, inexpensive nursing bras though they can be difficult to locate in the store. They have had a sports style as well as regular styles. They generally cost around $11.

Blessings,
Krisann

Michele,
I never even thought of taking out the underwire on a bra. Can you do that with ANY bra? And how does it change the support? the look?

Are the Leading Lady bras in the JCP stores? or just catalogue?

What a novel concept, Michele! I never thought of taking out the underwire. I love the seamless look of all the underwire nursing bras but never wanted the wire. Does the underwire-removed version give plenty of support for a larger-busted person? (Not extra large, just larger than average while nursing.)

I'll have to check these out. I also need quick one-handed access. And I like the price. Thanks!

Not much at all in my experience. Really, the change is minimal.

That I don't know. I haven't been to a JCP store in a while. I ordered mine online last week when they were having free shipping since I already knew what size I needed.

Irene,
Enough support for at least a 40DD - beyond that I can't say.

OK, I'm well within that range, so thanks!

And one more question just so I don't mess up the wire removal: Do you just snip and outer corners of the wire casing fabric? Do you do anything after that? (I'm thinking a dot or two of fray check might be in order.)

Yes, I use a seam ripper to make a small slit and then pull the wire out. You can use Fray Check if you want but if the casing is a knit (most are) it won't fray anyway. I usually don't bother.

My favorite are the nursing camisoles from Motherwear. I'm fairly small chested, only about a 36D when nursing, so these provide plenty of support, and they have the added bonuses of keeping me warm and allowing me to tuck something into my pants/skirts. I know that sounds strange, but I like to be tucked...

huh, the link worked for me. yes! the lifestyle bra is fantastic. it looks like a normal bra and is seamless. it is not the old bravado bra and does provide plenty of support. have you tried this bra, michele? because i quite agree that the bravado supreme gives little support and feels very comfy. the lifestyle bra is for me, the prefect nursing bra.

i've tried fancy free and they never hold up to normal use. i've had the underwires come out (and then removed them like michele) but my bras didn't hold up in the back strap. i don't think the straps are made to support the weight once the underwires are removed. that's been my experience anyway. I'm also a 40DD. i've had 2 leading lady bras and liked them alright but they aren't seamless and so i feel frumpy in them. the cups tended to pucker for me.

molly, i have drooled over those nursing cami's and wish i were smaller and could wear them. target also sells a nursing cami, but the sizes only go to C.

Interesting! It's funny depending on your size and personal choice what "Nursing bra" can mean to you.

Have you seen Bosom Buddies which show a variety of nursing bras for all ranges.

Has anyone tried the Goddess ones?

I'm a little more buxom since being pregnant, and nursing bras were quite a challenge. I went through so many partum and postpartum.

I didn't like the Bravado because it just made me look uni-chested. The bras I normally wear are fitted by a specialist (locally I have a dealer) not gorgeous but very supportive. They can also be used as nursing bras, as they open at the top front, but since they aren't all cotton, most people wouldn't want to use them. According to my fitting lady, the bra should lift and separate and also cover...which the nursing bras were not doing the trick.

I recently tried on VSC bras during a sale, and this fitting lady kept telling me they fit wonderfully when all the bras kept doing was pressing down and I was hanging out. Steam was coming out of my ears when she was telling me she had been doing this job over 7 years and I didn't know what I was talking about!

But I digress. Just enjoying the conversation even though it doesn't exactly pertain to me right now.

No, I haven't tried that one but since it costs almost twice what my favorite LL bra does I probably won't. I do find the LL bras last me for several years.

FYI if you don't know ladies, hand wash and dry your bras, they will last much longer. Actually I wash mine in the front loader on gentle cycle and hang to dry. The dryer breaks down the elastic and so they lose support and wear out faster. But you probably all already knew that!

K-Mart and Target sell nursing cami's in a size D. You have to search and there usually aren't very many but I have gotten a few. I'm not particularly fond of the way that elastic feels all the way around though so I'm actually working on my own design of a nursing cami for larger sizes.

Jenn,

I have heard that Jeunique are the best built bras out there. I have never seen one but would love to study the construction. . . because for those of you who sew, you know you can also make your own bras. It's NOT hard to do and while it does take tweaking, once you get a good fit you are set. The cost is incredibly less than buying them. I haven't done a nursing one yet though - other than my sleep bra a few weeks ago.

God bless,
