Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm not sure this was covered in another recent thread of a similar nature, so I'll start a new thread. We've had a power outage most of the night and morning, due to ice storms so I was feeding my hungry Hobbits, and anticipating a full day without electricity. While lining up the foods that could be prepared without power and planning how we could keep from opening the frig I recalled preparing school lunches when I was a girl. We made lunches for six after dinner every school night, assembly line style. The thought popped into my head that it might be helpful to do something similar in preparation for the a new day of homeschooling! How nice to have lunches or snacks ready to pull out and be freed of all the prep time in the midst of a busy learning day! Hmmmm, visions of reusable containers, neatly stacked and ready....oh, how nice 'twould be! Another side benefit to packing individual lunches or snacks would be portion control; a big issue when you have boys who could easily eat the entire family's share in one sitting. Well, I'm off to clean up from the power outage and on to get groceries....wonder what things would be nice for pre-made lunches and snacks!

Great idea! I was thinking yesterday about how hectic lunch is around here. For some reason my kids aren't big sandwich eaters so I always have something hot which means cooking, which means taking more than 15 minutes to prepare. I bet I could even have my big kids help make the lunches the evening before. I'd love to hear what others have to say. Some ideas off the top of my head are:

cheese cubes
nuts
fruit
carrot/celery sticks
Peanut butter in little cups (for dipping apples etc.)
small cups of yogurt
pretzels
crackers

It all seems to sound kind of "snacky" to me but is probably every bit as healthy, if not more so, than say, macaroni and cheese!

When we schooled in the dining room, right next to the kitchen, it distracted everyone terribly if anyone went to grab "a little something" during school time. I got around this by having the dc take turns each day to set up a snack before we began school. It needed to be healthy, so it always included fruit or carrot sticks, maybe celery stuffed with peanutbutter, and also some kind of cracker or pretzels. Each person's serving was placed in a dish and/or on a piece of paper toweling, so they could grab their own when they felt the urge and there was no dispute about how much each child took. Now the children are older, there are fewer schooling, and the kitchen and schoolroom are not so distractingly close to each other, so we don't do this any longer. But when it was a good idea, it was a good idea!

Peace,
Nancy
