I have a bad UTI and in desperation mode. I go to see the doctor tomorrow afternoon but the pain is getting really bad (blood in urine, etc.). All my self help treatments aren't working. Already downed more than a gallon of water today, cranberry pills (I can't drink the juice), Vitamin C...it's not helping.
I'm trying to offer it up for the election and Poor Souls (it does seem these extra crosses happen during this time of the year ) but to get some sleep tonight, anyone have any other obvious suggestions that I'm missing? I'm going to run out and get some of the over the counter stuff for UTIs...my grocery store was out today.
Thanks for any advice!

Drink a solution of bicarbonate of soda about 1 teaspoon to half a pint. It helps.
Hot water bottle on tummy? Warm bath?
Poor you. Much sympathy.

The over the counter UTI meds are pretty good...they'll definitely tide you over until tomorrow. Find a 24-hour pharmacy, if need be!

Jenn - I have all my natural health books out. Recommendations:
1) Acidophilus supplement(especially if you end up needing antibiotics)
2) Calcium/Magnesium - I take Natural Calm which is a fizzy liquid thing - really calms down the nervous system and may help with bladder irritability and help you sleep
3) Garlic as a natural antibiotic
4) Eating blueberries
5) Celery, watermelon and parsley - natural diuretics
6) Avoid caffeine,sugar and alcohol
7) Take a 20 minute hot sitz bath twice a day - will help relieve the pain. Adding apple cider vinegar to the sitz bath may help too
8) Avoid citrus
Can you take cranberry juice mixed with apple juice and sparkling water - the only way I can drink it.
I will pray for a good night's sleep for you.
Marilyn

Jenn, I don't have any suggestions other than the cranberry juice. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Jenn, have you tried the Sitz bath? it helped my 4-yo tremendously. The doctor recommended baking soda in the sitz bath too.

Jenn,
That is such intense pain. I call the dr., whine and beg until they call a prescription in and I'll drive to a 24-hr pharmacy if I have to. That said, I have had nights that went o.k.; for some reason the pain and frequency subsided a bit once I could fall asleep. I would recommend anything you can manage from what was already posted above. Since it's already late now, I'm hoping you're getting some rest and relief.

Thanks everyone for your help...I did a few of the hints, and then the OTC meds did help...but the second or third gallon of drinking water probably did the trick. I did get a pretty good night's sleep...the night before was dreadful. I get less pain when my bladder is full, but it's a vicious cycle...get up to go, but then drink more.
Can't wait until this afternoon!

Jenn,
When you go to see the doctor, ask them if there is a quick way to check next time for infection, so that you
don't have to wait sooooooo long. I get those troublesome UTI frequently, and have set up a "quick" route with my doctor....go to a (approved by the doc)
walk in clinic for a quick urine check test by the lab...doctor review...and call in anitbiotics.
This is of course if I can't kick the symptoms with the usual fluids, cranberry, and mega vita C's. I will pray
for your quick recovery!

Hope you're feeling better Jenn. I know what a UTI is like - they drive me nuts. I was getting them frequently and I thought I was going to lose my mind. If you're interested I'll tell you how I kicked mine. The antibiotics worked, but I was taking them so often I was beginning to get worried about how they were affecting my health. Then the yeast infection came as a result of the antibiotic which was a result of the uti. That was the clincher! It was aweful - so glad to be better and willing to share what I have learned.

Thanks, Michaela, that is so sweet. In the UTI area I'm feeling better, not 100 percent, but getting there. Thanks so much.
Becky, I was plagued with urinary problems since I was a little girl...and then after a certain age they only came sporadically... I had to fast overnight for a medical test when this was starting to come on, and that really aggravated it...by then I couldn't throw it with all my natural treatments. But please, PM with any help or advice you have!

Please post it Becky. I'd like to see it too. My midwives tried Uva Ursi once but I eventually had to go on antibiotics.

I guess there are others in the same boat as I regarding these UTI's! Here's my story... I have had UTI's off and on for 3 years (ever since my last baby was born, though I don't see why that would be the problem, although it was a c-section so I had a cathetor) but anyway... They drove me nuts because the pain would be so bad. I would run to the doctor, she would put me on various antibiotics to get rid of them. It was a real cycle. She eventually put me on cipro which cause an terrible yeast infection that lasted almost a month even with the antibiotic to get rid of it. She eventually gave me a refillable antibiotic and said as soon as you feel it coming on, just start taking these. Well, I am someone who hates to take any medication and anti-biotics are at the top of my most hated list! I expressed this to her and she sent me to a urologist. Without an examination or anything, he said he would do the same thing my doctor was doing and that all the hype about antibiotics was wrong and they are not harmful. This was all very difficult for me and I could tell I just wasn't healthy anymore. I had read that anti-biotics aren't good because we build up an immunity to them, not to mention the affects they have on our liver. ANYWAY, I went to see a naturopath about it. She explained it the same way my doctor had. I don't have enough natural "friendly" bacteria to fend off the bad bacteria that starts the infection. But, her remedy was the opposite. Instead of killing the bad, I needed to increase the good. So I started taking acidopholus, 3 of them (which seems like a lot), each night on an empty stomach. I haven't had a problem since. Now, I will tell you that when I spoke to her I wasn't in the middle of an infection. She did say however, that if one comes back I should take lots of cranberry and an herb called bucho (or something like that) to clear it. The acidopholus is doing the trick though and I would much rather take that than medicine. (Unfortunately, insurance doesn't pay for it though!). Hope that helps.
Blessings!
Becky

Just thought I should add one more thing that could be helping to fend off these infections or possibly nip them in the bud. Around the same time I saw the naturopath, I also started reading about the Fat Flush Plan. While I haven't bought it completely, I have added a few things to my daily routine that could be helping. I have cut out sugar almost completely at this point (this was very difficult for me ). but I also have been following the author's recommendation of drinking strong lemon water each morning, and I do drink diluted, unsweetened cranberry juice as well. Drinking the amount she suggests in the book is hard - it doesn't taste good at all! But I do try to drink some, especially in the morning. Perhaps adding the cranberry juice, lemon juice and cutting out sugar is helping as well. Hoping some of this is helpful!

Thanks Becky. I'll be trying some of these suggestions.
Some other tips I've found helpful...
* avoid baths, showering is better
* empty your bladder before and after marital relations (easier said than done )
* drink the 8 cups of water a day (minimum)
I hadn't heard of acidophilis for this but it makes sense to me. I am in a similar boat as you were, Becky. My doctor wants me on antibiotics for a month! I'll try your methods first.
