Ds will be 9 next week!  He still wholeheartedly believes in Santa. I am just wondering when most kids find out the real scoop on the guy in the red suit. I am thinking by now  I know I did.
Since ds is not in school, and it doesn't seem to be a topic of conversation among his homeschooled friends, I am thinking we may have to tell him--to possibly prevent embarrasment at a later time.
When, if you do Santa, do kids usually find out? Would you tell him or enjoy his innocence?
Just curious...I am going to let things go for this year, since I am enjoying his awe and wonder at the whole idea, but next year......
We had a whole herd of deer in our yard yesterday-lots o' bucks, so pretty. Ds was explaining to dd that they were Santas reindeer checking on whether they were being naughty or nice. Dd's eyes as big as saucers eating up every word--hmmm, though didn't make much difference in HER behavior for the day

Anne, my oldest boy is 11 and he *still* believes. And I was 12 when I found out! (Though being in school, I was teased for still believing at such a late age). I guess we're a bunch of late-bloomers over here!

Good question. I think I was 9 when I found out. I was so upset that my parents lied to me. (They really built up the Santa story. I think I may have asked them for the truth and they kept the story going, so I argued with kids at the bustop, then found out I was wrong.)  This is the first time I've ever used a little red face.
I can't even talk about Santa with my dc. My dh tells them about Santa though. I wonder when he'll tell them the truth. Because of homeschooling, I can't imagine they'll find out on their own.
I'm thinking that I be might too serious or too factual. The other day, my ds got something in his eye and he wouldn't let me help him to get it out. I called my dh and he told me to tell my son that I'm going to use my magic powers to get it out. I couldn't do it.

My 11 yo dd still believes, as do my younger ones. Although they do know the difference between the North Pole Santa and St. Nicholas. We haven't come across any serious questions yet. However, we did have a reality check with the Tooth Fairy. My dd was 9 at the time and she left her tooth under her pillow night after night for about 2 or 3 nights. I kept forgetting to exchange the money and the tooth and every mornning she would wake up and say, "I just can't believe the Tooth Fairy has forgotten about me." Finally I just said, "OK, this is the deal. I'm the Tooth Fairy. I forgot. Here's your dollar and don't tell you little sisters and brother." It actually made her laugh and she loved having this grown-up information that her siblings didn't have.

This is too funny. I have had the same problem--I fall asleep with the kids at 9pm or so. Fortunately, ds forgets too so I can usually slip something on his dresser during the day
Glad to hear our older kids can still have the joy of believing...thank you for sharing everyone.

I love that my kids believe but I am afraid that they will be mad at me for lying to them. I was quite old when I found out and really am glad that they have the joy of believing. (Funny though, my 5 year old is the one that knows. She asked me pointed questions and wouldn't let me skirt around them- I wasn't going to lie outright)

That's exactly how and when my oldest learned the truth about Santa! I was rather sad to have it all end so early for her. But she enjoyed being in on the secret in the years after that.

FWIW, St. Therese of Lisieux's life changing moment resulted from this very thing. It is portrayed in the movie as well as being in her book, Story of a Soul.

Santa is played way down here, as in we very seldom even bring the jolly guy up in conversation. Most all our Christmas books center on Christ, except for the "Night Before Christmas". We do St. Nicholas and Santa brings Christmas pencils, granola bars, boxes of junk cereal, or something pretty darn small. The kids just don't give him much thought. Who cares really cares about Christmas pencils when Mom and Dad give the "fun" gifts. However, I haven't told anyone that Santa didn't exist, except for the oldest who asked at about 13 or so. It didn't bother him at all. It did bother him to think there wasn't a tooth fairy Duh!
My 16 and 14 year old sons know that this is fairy tale fun, but the 12 year old girl still believes. It has never been a big deal here.

Not a bad thing Dawn! My father used to say that those who bloomed/matured late, matured best! I wholeheartedly agree!
