Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What do you consider befor purchasing Christmas gifts for your children? My dh and I were discussing this and he started off by saying that he really didn't want to buy the kids a bunch of junk that is going to end up at the bottom of the toy box or in the trash can. I heartily agreed. I'm trying to come up with a list of criteria we can use when we go shopping. This is what I have so far. What would you add?
The Christmas gifts should be:

Educational,

Something that can be shared (in a reasonable way - obviously if my 13yo got a woodburning kit, the 3yo wouldn't share it with him),

Nothing "cheap" that breaks easily (I re-learn this lesson every year!) ,

The item should match the recipients interests (obviously) or spark a new interest (like the woodburning kit for my nonartistic 13 yo)

No guns or swords (my boys already have plenty of both but this year I'm going for "peaceful"!

Anything to add?
Blessings and prayers for a peaceful weekend to all!

I guess it would be educational but I like things that they can continue as they get older or spring board onto other simliar things.. like I'm getting a whole selection of knifty knitter looms for my girls (5-9) I think they can enjoy them now as well as have success in making things.. and that will in turn help them be more interested in real crocheting and knitting where they have a great deal more leeway in what they can make.

Also things to try out.. like we've talked about paint by numbers for a start at using oil paints.

Oh.. tools for growing up.. whatever that is for you.. building a tool chest, kitchen stuff, I want to get my girls tea sets..

I agree with Theresa, no batteries. I also don't like stuffed animals. We go for quality over quantity, purchasing one main gift, a nice book, and a few stocking stuffers. Since our house is somewhat small, we also try to stay away from large items.
