So, I called my OB this morning to find out how long I should expect the pain from the stent to last (hopefully not for the next 78 days til delivery ). She said that the pain might last that long, but hopefully not - not feeling real positive about that though.
Of course she also told me the results of my 1 hour glucose test which of course came back too high meaning I get to take the 3 hour test now ! Like I don't have enough going on with trying to take care of 2 small boys, a baby in utero, our home and try to deal with the pain.
Sorry for the small rant. The actual point of this post was to see if anyone has any good ideas/tips on how to pass the 3 hour test. I would really like to avoid having to deal with the extra stress. If any of you have any great ideas, I would love to hear them.

You must be having a girl -- each time I was pregnant with a girl, I would "flunk" the tests and be labeled "gestational diabetic". But I know for a fact that with my younger daughter, I tested my blood faithfully and ate what I wanted and was fine the whole time. I'm sure GB is a legitimate issue for folks, but sheez it sure would be nice if there was a better test and then followup (I remember they even charged me $100 to attend a mandatory diabetic support group meeting to learn how to eat properly -- $100 that insurance didn't cover and that was an absolute waste of time.
Sorry for MY rant -- this is such a sore subject with me. I'll keep you in my prayers that it all works out and that you pass that longer test!

refuse it
the GTT doesn't have real accurate results..
You can get a home monitor and monitor your own blood sugars for a week.. and not only learn if you're staying too high but things like, you might be able to eat normally but not have an ice cream sundae. I mean.. you learn your limits not just if you excede certain numbers one time because of attacking your body with sugar.

Cindy,
I'm so sorry you're having to deal with all this!
That 3-hour test is awful...I had to have it when I was pregnant w/ my first baby. I don't know that you can do anything to help it come out normal. It's a much more accurate test than the 1-hour test...I've read that about 80% of the positive results for the 1-hour test are false! So, as long as you don't have gestational diabetes, it should come out normal.
I'll pray for you and hope that you get some relief, soon.
Dawn

I hesitate to give this advice, lest you have GD, however those tests are so ridiculous. You can refuse, I have and many others have, simply research it yourself, go back to the doctor armed with facts, and stay peaceful Easier said than done I know, I will pray for your peace of mind. Just know that you have rights and you can refuse, research and discover for yourself how many of these tests are just money making gimmicks! They are fear driven and fear is never a good motivator. Ask yourself and your OB if you have any other signs of GD, is there any reason to expose your baby and your self to such high anounts of sugar and stress? I will be praying, again this is a persoanl decision, you know your self and your medical condition.
Blessed Gianna pray for you!

I'm so sorry that you have gone through all this, Cindy. When you took the one hour, did you have any food before it? Was your stress level high? Did you have high carbs and sugars the day before?
I would ask if you can retake the 1 hour, and make sure you don't eat anything like orange juice or high carbs to make the numbers high.
The problem is if you do have GD, you have to take the test to get covered by insurance for all those expensive blood testers and things.
I had GD, but I had symptoms and requested the tests before required...

I had the 1 hour test done on Thursday morning, which consequently was about an hour before I was admitted into the hospital with my kidney stone. I hadn't had anything to eat prior to the test, but I was in some serious pain that brought me to tears. Don't know if that could affect the test or not.

In a word, yes. Stress and pain can mess everything up.

The home monitoring (you can get the monitor and something like 60 strips at walmart for under $100) are cheaper for paying out of pocket than the GTT.
Refusing the GTT doesn't mean you can't find out if you have GD.
Having a low sugar/carb diet before the test (I know it's a fasting test but like the several days before) may give you higher readings on the test..
Excersize can help.. often they won't let you.. go to the bathroom as often as you can get away with it and walk in place or whatever you can do to stay moving.
The one hour test has such a high rate of false positive because it only tests for the time of when you get the highest blood sugars.. on the 3 hr test.. you're testing fasting, 1, 2, and 3 hours.. 3 of those numbers need to be high to be considered GD.. the 1 hr is the one most likely to be high.

My advice for passing the 3 hour test is do not get sick during it. You have to repeat it if you do.

I forgot what month you have to have the one hour test? I was thinking that it's going to be my turn, soon...

Jennifer -
You take the 1 hour test somewhere around 24-28 weeks (I'm 27 almost 28 now).
Jodie - So if I understand your post right, I should NOT eat a low sugar/carb diet the few days before? I would think that I should go low sugar/carb, so please let me know if I misinterpreted your post. Thanks.
I actually called the OB again this morning since I distinctly remember one of the OBs telling me on my first hospital visit that she wouldn't do the 1 hour test while I was in the hospital because what was happening with my kidney could affect the results. When I brought this up, the nurse practitioner told me that that was right, but that I still need to do the 3 hour test. I asked if the pain I'm still feeling could affect this test as well, and she said she didn't believe it would affect the test as a whole - perhaps one of the draws, but not all 4.
Blah!

What she said. What I told you this morning. I have the kit (and I'm finished with it) and I'll show you how to do it, but you better come over today...

It might be a stress eliminator to just take the test. I know that sounds crazy...you lose a day, yes, but in the scheme of things you can get a real idea of how you need to take care of your baby.
The doctor might be insisting on another test because of the kidney stones...it could be related. Or other factors -- is there sugar in your urine, is the weight gain too much, history of large babies...?
And if you don't take the test, I'd still take it as a wake-up call to look at what you're eating. Don't try to beat the test for a day, but for the long haul. Caffeine can aggravate kidney stones, and affect the baby. No white sugar and no white flour are the idyllic diet for every pregnant woman, more fruits and veggies and complex carbs and proteins. Simple, logical. Gestational diabetes just takes it up to the next level to count the carbs and be more religious about it.
I have had one pregnancy to full term. I always had low blood sugar symptoms and thought that was my problem. They tested me, and I barely failed my 1 hour, but insisted I take the 3 hour. I'm glad I did, although it was strenuous. I was only 12 weeks along, so I was in for the long haul.
But taking the test and getting the diagnosis gave me peace of mind and an excellent motivator to keep on track.

Ditto everything Jenn said. I opted to do the checks at home because I was swinging between hypoglycemia and really high numbers. I needed to know what my body could and couldn't tolerate. And there is a whole lot it can't tolerate. But I think we're all better off without the caffeine and the "white things." I plan to continue to eat this way (hoepfully without the nausea) after I'm not pregnant. I think it will be better for weight control and, more importantly, emtional health over the long haul. It's really not about beating the test; it's all about gaining information and learning from the experience. That's just one of the many, many ways that having children makes us grow.

Cindy - right.. you should not eat low carb/sugar before hand.. your body will react more severely to the sugar in the test if it's not used to it in the diet.
