Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

For those of you who have gotten pregnant while breastfeeding, how did you know you were pregnant?

What sypmtoms did you have and how far along were you before you realized you might be expecting?

You would think with as many kids as I have I wouldn't need to ask, but I never breastfed for more than 6 months until now.

Thank you in advance!

Blessings,
Krisann

I'm one of the anomolies and get my cycles back between 4 and 6 months no matter what.. so for me it's the same as if I'm not breastfeeding..

I do know though that those who get their cycles back later seem to have a lot of "pregnancy" symptoms that is really just fertility returning.. not pregnancy.

Krisann,
I noticed being more tender when I was nursing and I was also a lot more tired. I was a couple of months along when I found out, I thought I was only a month pregnant so they did an early ultrasound to date the baby so they would have an accurate due date.

My babies just refuse to nurse. Every time, even the babies I miscarried, the nursing baby would quit within days of conception. I still never figure it out right away.

I usually have a period before we concieve again, sometimes two. My cycles come back very early post partum. I generally have very minimal early pregancy symptoms too, so I spend a few months wondering if I'm really even pregnant!

I've ovulated and conceived twice before I started my period postpartum. The first time I had no symptoms, conceived around 17 months postpartum and miscarried...(started bleeding and thought it was return of menses, but as it got heavier and heavier, realized something else was happening).

The second time I ovulated before starting my period (13 mos postpartum) and was indeed pregnant with a healthy pregnancy. I did have a warning sign that my fertility was returning--fertile mucus--just one time--but that was enough! I had all the usual "early" pregnancy signs...increased tenderness during breastfeeding, tiredness, and that weird feeling that I always get in early pregnancy--ocassionally out-of-breath, having to sit down and feel the blood coursing through my veins..and sometimes sudden food aversions...though no nausea as it is too early..

You're in my prayers, Krisann!

Krisann,

I've never become pregnant before my first post-partum period, but if I start to wonder, I just start taking my basal body temperature.

One of the first signs of pregnancy is an elevated basal body temperature that lasts for 3 weeks...a woman will normally menstruate after 2 weeks of elevated temperatures.

If my temp is low, then I know I haven't ovulated and that I'm not pregnant...if it's high, then I know it's a possibility! This probably won't be very helpful to you unless you know what your normal post-ovulation temperature is, though.

Time will tell, right?

HTH!

Dawn

I nursed my first for 11 months, and got pregnant when she was 9 months old. I notices a DRASTIC decrease in my milk supply. As someone else said above, my older daughter wasn't so interested at nursing much more after that. It made weaning realitavly easy though. My cycle had returned at 7 months, but strangely with my second dd who is 10 months now, I still haven't got it back (and I nurse her once a day now...).

I always think I'm pregnant. lol

Hmmm,

Ok, well my normal, non-pregnant, pre-ovulation, temp is about 97.7

My current temp has been around 98.8 for the past couple of weeks, I keep feeling like I am having hot flashes so it could be menopause too, right (I am 38)?

I have been noticing the fertile mucous off and on for about the same amount of time that my temp has been up.

My nipples are tender but *only* because Jack keeps biting and pinching . Dad laughs so he thinks it is funny.

I almost always feel naseated in the morning whether I am pregnant or not. I know, weird.

So what do you think? Fertility returning, menopause, expecting, or just nuts?

I plan to buy a home test if necessary after we return from Arizona next week.

Blessings,
Krisann

Krisann,

If your temp has been around 98.8 for the past few weeks, it sounds like you've probably had a thermal shift, which means it's very likely that you've ovulated. If it's only been at 98.8 for 2 weeks, then you should expect your period any day now. If it's been at 98.8 for closer to 3 weeks, I would strongly suspect pregnancy and take a pregnancy test.
