Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've got a cold. I'm 8 days from my due date. My throat tickles and when I cough, it's a little wet. I'm tired and chilly. What do I take/do?

Oh, Elizabeth, I'm so sorry you're sick. Perfect timing, huh?! I usually get a nasty cold at least once in all of my pregnancies and since all but 1 of my chickies were winter births (at the height of cold and flu season I might add), I'm feeling your pain.

Here's what I do when I'm feeling yucky...Quick make a HUGE pot of homemade chicken noodle soup (the more garlic, the better...it might make you a little stinky, but when I want relief from the yuckies I just don't care! ) Is there someone nearby who will make you some if you ask?

I take baths with that vapor bath stuff you buy for the kids. You know, the kind you pour into the water that also smells (did I mention that everything I do might make you smell a little funny? ) And...I use Vicks Vapor Rub (just a little during the daytime) to relieve cold symptoms. I use lots of it at night (so gross) but it works wonders for us and I can breathe when I sleep.

I take plenty of Echinacea, cut out anything I can that's stressful (that's not already a part of my daily duties!), put up the baby gates in the livingroom to keep the littler chickies in and hang out on the couch in my slippers. Sometimes I think just the "downtime" gives me some relief.

When I'm really sick and the tickle in my throat is unbearable, I try a squirt of Chloraseptic spray in there. Check with your OB first, though. My OB has it listed on his "Safe Medications to Use During Pregnancy" handout. (No alcohol, no aspirin, no sugar in it) The relief is HUGE and I've used it only once or twice (1 or 2 squirts) in all my pregnancies. I think I'd say my kids are "normal"

Here's a few other safe meds on the list:
Halls, cough drops, Sudafed, Tylenol Cold, Benadryl

Hang in there and I'll pray you kick this thing in a hurry (before your new little one arrives!!)

Traditional Medicinals or Yogi Teas --- Cold Formulas---have aided me much. Hot, hot tea with lemon, if you have....as hot as you can stand. I gargle with Hydrogen Peroxide for sore throat. Robitussin DM (Dextromathorphan sole ingredient) has appeared to be safe during my pregnancies. Eventually, I have to take it and it is a wonder in stopping that cough! And Tylenol when needed if natural remedies don't help. And prayers. I'll pray. I got really sick before delivering Andrew but it was a Stomach/Intestinal Flu....oh, that was fun.

I will pray that you get better quickly. Some things that I have used in the past are:
Hot water mixed with lemon juice and a little honey.
Hot water and cayenne pepper mixed together for a gargle ~ this is very spicy, but it helps.

The hot water mixed with lemon juice and honey (they have exact recipes on line) works like a charm. Honey is a natural expectorant. I took several Tbsps. of this mixture a day when I couldn't shake my last cold.

I also use elderberry, and eucalyptus essential oil on a hankie.. hot lemonade (made with honey if you can stand it) lots and lots of liquids (gotta stay well hydrated to move that stuff out), saline nose spray, gargling with saltwater can help clear out your throast of gunk, vitamin c, and SLEEP.. your body heals itself during sleep.. so you NEED sleep to get better.

Elizabeth,

Rose Hips tea has worked very well for me in getting rid of a cold.

Also, extra vitamin C.

I'm not a natural remedy girl, so, especially so close to your due date, I say Dayquil.    Hope you're better soon.

When we get coughs, my mother always tells us to drink ginger tea. Basically, take some raw ginger (peel it first) and boil it in water. Boil it as long as you want (the longer the better). It will taste a bit spicy, but it works really well. Add honey to taste and drink it like tea.

ETA: Hope you feel better.

Elizabeth,

I would use Pulsatilla and at this stage in your pregnancy it may also be helpful in other ways.

God bless,

Sleep. Sleep. And more sleep.

I know its near impossible, but I would try not to do anything that exerts yourself.

I would also drink a ton and take vitamins.

Rest is your best hope (and we'll offer a prayer or two ).

Sleep is the best remedy - but I also resort to very hot showers with the hot water on my sinuses (I generally get sinus headaches if I have a cold). Gargle with hot salt water. You can even suck it up your nose to get relief - a bit gross but very effective. I also boil salt water and stand near the pan to get the salty steam. I put extra lemon in my water and generally drink it hot. Hope you are feeling better.
