I was reminded by the curly hair thread that I have been meaning to ask those of you with long hair for a book recommendation on UpDos. I have a lot of shoulder length straight hair that does not fit in most of the jaw type clips made today. The clips break because I have so much hair (albeit fine). I mainly wear my hair back in a pony tail but I know there must be a good book someone can recommend that could offer ideas other than the plain old ponytail (ie. french twist,fancy braids and buns, etc.) Does anyone know of such a book?

You can probably figure out how to use other hair holding devices than hair sticks and they aren't needed on some of the styles.

I have TONS of hair (but fine, too) and a french twist is so great. I use a special jaw type clip that doesn't dig into your head and bobby pins add strength. I also pay a little more for those clips that are sturdy. Also a clip with like 6 teeth works better than those with more teeth (like 8). I'll try to find a picture of my clip.

I actually find the hair sticks to work best.. anything else slips out of my hair.. I have long (hip length), fine, thick, straight hair.. I've heard good things about the octupus?? clips.. the underside is flat so they don't dig into your head.. but I haven't been able to get one for myself yet.

I could never figure out how to use a hairstick until I watched the Brit show Changing Rooms once and Anna Ryder Richardson grabbed Handy Andy's pencil and bunned her hair. He thought it was cheeky but I thought it was brilliant and I've used a hairstick nearly everyday since.
Well, I should be honest after those beautiful hairsticks Jodie posted, I use chopsticks (literally the free ones you have to break apart) and pencils the most. The wood stays in my hair much better than the glassy-plasticy ones. I had a really nice stick I picked up walking in the woods once that was so smooth and cool looking, I just ran it through a pencil sharpener when I got home and presto! An all-natural hair ornament! With my thick hair I tend to break sticks so I like free and cheap for everyday wear.
Also, I find the bun stays in much, better than a ponytail if I'm active. I have to support the ponytail with a visor or it pulls right out. Whereas I can put in a low bun and wear my big floppy hat over it = better sun protection = less skin cancer when I grow up, right?

well I buy the cheap walmart/drugstore ones.. pencils fall out of my hair.. they're not thicker at one end.. BUT I can use a crochet hook  put the hook at the top and it'll catch and not fall through.

I have never been able to figure out how to use hairsticks. I have always been so jealous of women who can just grab a pencil and put up their hair! I need a book called hairdos for dummies!

i've always been amused by hairsticks, no offense. they remind me too much of chopsticks and i've always imagined people taking them out of their hair and using them at the sushi place. then maybe they wipe them off and put them back in their hair. then their hair smells like soy sauce. at least i've had this fantasy going on in my head since childhood.

I have to fold my hair in half.. and I twist it.. then keep twisting it up to my head in a bun shape.. to hold it well.. I slip the stick through hair not part of the bun then into the bun and try and catch hairs under the bun then back out of hte bun on the other side and under hair not in the bun on that side.. like you're sewing it on sorta. When I do it right.. thanks to the twisting.. it can actually hold my hair up off my neck without pulling too hard on my head and I get less flyaway too. (the twisting)

Ah...I may give it another try. I think it is the sewing motion that gets me. I never was much of a seamstress!

Maybe think of it in three stitches to start
1. side hair
2. through bun
3. side hair
And try it with dampish hair, it'll cooperate nicely.
I think one stick is more comfy than multiples, and I have a tendency to (deliberately) snap the stick off at the proper length to barely show out of my bun as I once ran just the stick into the standing rigging and nearly ripped my scalp off  at least that's what it felt like!

Hair: A Book of Braiding and Styles by Klutz is the nearest thing I've found so far!

Oh, I know the feeling! I once had a horse try to bite me on top of my head and actaully pick me up with her teeth by my ponytail! Ouch!

I really like this book. It's not as "insulting" as you think, Theresa! My sisters and I used this quite frequently, even as older girls (there were 5 in the family). I have a few other how-to braid books, but this was my favorite.
