Hi, Friends!

I have a huge frustration: mildew on my bathroom walls. Not sure why..........the fan is always on and the window always open during and after showers.........and it is not very humid here (usually! 53% yesterday!), only about 20%..........

anyway.........it is hard to get off the walls

does anyone know the best way to do this?

anyone know the best way to reduce this from happening again?

also, I am planning to paint this bathroom before the end of the year..........

if,I do not get it all off, is it a huge deal to paint over it?

how do I know if it is under the surface of the paint already there?

do I just go ahead and paint and someday fix the whole bathroom because it is rotting away?

is there such a paint that reduces the chances of it affecting the walls underneath, and does it really work?

any and all advice and sharing of experiences desired!

been meaning to ask this for months!!

Thanks!

If you are planning on painting the walls, then the following should work. Mix a bleach and water solution (I think it's 50/50), get a white rag, dip it in the solution, and wipe the mildew/mold from the wall (this will most likely take the paint off, too). Purchase a mildew/mold resistant paint and repaint your bathroom.

We had mold growing on one section of the wall, underneath our kitchen sink (a leaking pipe had caused it). This is what we were told to do and it worked.

I think KILZ wall treatment will also help as a primer.

KILZ makes a great mildew treatment. I'd do the bleach and water thing, let it dry very thoroughly, and then get KILZ.

Our house is very prone to mildew. During the winter the house seals so tightly that the dreaded black crud grows very easily. We were told we need to leave a window cracked pretty much all the time...but that hasn't helped much over the years. ????

You may need to do the bleach/water thing more than once to get rid of all the mildew.

Perfect timing! I was wondering the same thing last night. We're planning on re-doing a bathroom that has had a lot of mildew issues.

I had been wonder if we should bleach first then Kilz, or just Kilz it. I think we will go with the former to do as much as we can regarding the mildew pre-renovation.

Thank you for asking, and thanks to all who answered!
