Hi!

Does anyone know if it is OK to keep taking cod liver oil and evening primrose oil while pregnant? Has anyone done that? My OB isn't really into "alternative medicine" so this isn't a question for her.

Thanks for helping!
Christine

what's the primrose oil for and while I'm at it, what's the raspberry leaf for???

My ob recommended raspberry leaf tea years ago, but I forget what for... I just remember using a lot of honey in it.

Hi Christine,

I took CLO throughout my entire last pregnancy. I took about 1 TBL. a day, some days none if I forgot. I have taken evening primrose oil during past pregnancies per my midwife's request, though I did not this last time.

I used the evening primrose oil during the last couple weeks to encourage the cervix to ripen. The capsules can be taken orally or used as a supository. It is also used as hormone support because it is high in essential fatty acids, mainly linoleic and Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA). I have heard many midwives recommend EPO and others discourage its use due to its effects on hormone balance. The American Botanical Council states that EPO is safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Red raspberry leaf tea is a uterine muscle tonic. It helps support a stong uterus and aid in contractions. I used to take one cup per day in the first trimester, two in the second and three in the third. And yes, the honey really helps !

So do you all take these along with a prenatal vitamins? I am curious because I started CLO and EPO just after our last baby was born in January. Since we are always open to life, I was thinking about whether or not these were safe during pregnancy as I had never taken them before. I wish I knew an OB who was understanding of this.

Thanks for any and all advice!
