Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was sitting quietly with a couple of my children on a park bench while the others played. On the next park bench over, two boys were duking it out, much to the amusement of two ladies (one of which was their mother!). The older one, we'll just dub him as the bully, picked on the younger like a vulture picks apart carrion, and laughed when he made the the younger one, we'll call him the victim, cry and lash out. The mother and her friend or sister or whatever were laughing at this ridiculous display. They encouraged the bully to keep on bullying and the victim to keep being victimized. They supported a hurtful relationship between siblings that could last as long as they live. I could barely stand to hear the mother and the other lady berate and sneer the younger child and tell him to climb a tree about 300 yards away so that they could talk. And I just wanted to give that older kid a piece of my mind, because they surely weren't. It appeared that they thought he was pretty cool. They didn't correct him once! What were they thinking!?!?!?

In the meantime, my 6 yo fell and came to me with a bleeding elbow and knee. He cried a little, I hugged him and washed the blood away. We sat together talking for a while and then we went to look at the ducks, geese and swans. My oldest was pushing my 3 yo on the swings and my two girls were playing an imaginary game together. They all asked what happened to my 6 yo and were sorry that he was hurt.

The only thing I could think of to do (without completely seething over ) was to provide a good example for them to follow. Should I have said something? What would you do in the same situation?

There are so many awful scenerios like this out there. Even in a Wal-Mart check-out line one can get an earful. Parents show no respect whatsoever when speaking to their children.

It's this in-your-face, rude, suck-it-up mentality America has. Office politics has leaked into the home. And, often, there is no home.

It's sinful. Really!

And, sad but true, we're the ones who are thought to be "weird!"

How horrible.
Sad to say, if you did say something about it, it most likely will do no good. Any parent that would sit back and laugh or encourage this behavior is living in a totally different world than we do. All you can offer are your prayers and your good example.
