Could anyone share what you take for vitamins and where you buy them? When I'm pregnant and nursing I faithfully take my prenatals, but I tend to slack off in between. I've been awfully tired lately (and not for the reason I'd hoped ). I know I need to eat better, but perhaps supplements would help. The aisle at Wild Oats is completely overwhelming! I do have a Dr.s appt next week, but I thought I'd ask here in the meantime. Thanks for any advice.

I decided a while ago to just keep taking pre-natals. I figured that since deciding to be open to life that I might get pregnant anytime. The current recommendation is to take pre-natals 3 months before getting pregnant so I figure that I might as well keep taking them!

I'm with Taffy...I take prenatals consistently. I get them from this pro-life pharmacy.

I also take extra folic acid, zinc and calcium. Added to that are raspberry leaf capsules which are excellent for uterine health, and EFAs.

This thread caught my eye... I was just thinking today about how I would like to get away from taking multivitamins. Ideally, I would like my family and I to get all of our vitamins from a well-balanced diet of whole foods, and I know families do this and do it well. My question is: How??? I am so overwhelmed by the idea, I don't even know where to begin, but it is something I'd like to work toward. Does anyone employ this nutrition strategy successfully?

I don't take a multi-vitamin unless I'm pregnant. What I do take is Coromega Fish Oil supplements and chewable Vitamin C (500 mg., 2-3x a day) from Trader Joe's.

Oh Rebecca, God bless you and all you have gone through. Thank you for sharing your story with me (us) here. I am very sorry to think you are suffering now and I will be praying for your health and healing.

I feel a bit ashamed that I am making so much out of my tiredness; when I read what others here are going through, or have been through in the past, I know I probably need a good swift kick in the pants!

I will check out the links you provided. They sound very interesting. I would consider anything you recommend so highly.

Thank you to everyone for your ideas. As I mentioned I have a dr.'s appt. next week and I plan to mention some of my symptoms to her but I don't usually like to go the traditional medicine route. For example, every year she suggests various forms of b.c. even though she knows (though I think she forgets) I'm Catholic. And once I mentioned some anxiety I was feeling and she immediately wanted to write me a prescription. Now I don't mean to say that is not warranted in many situations, but there was no other discussion. It was like "Oh you're tired? You're feeling worried? Here let me get my Rx form ..."

Well, I've gotten off base here. Lisa, I'd like to know more about fish oil supplements. And Tracy, I too would appreciate nutrition suggestions. I don't think a pill takes care of it all, but I thought it might help since I seem to be struggling to get 3 squares down a day!

Thanks all! More ideas?

I have absolutely had to take them with the last seven pregnancies! Even with them, I look as white as a ghost in post-partum pictures due to mild anemia.   I truly believe in this "insurance" for ourselves and our babies. I have taken Professional Prenatal Formula and they were a healthy 3 pregnancies, but it is slightly constipating for me.   I have taken Optivite + 500 Magnesium + 400 Folic + Flax Seed Oil with the last 3. I can't tolerate much iron.....I try to get it through nutritious food choices.   

Herb wise:   ginger for nausea (amazing); peppermint for digestion; raspberry --- uterine; nettles---varicosities; Traditional Medicinals Pregnancy Tea

I started taking Rainbow Light Prenatal One Multivitamin when I was pregnant with #8 in 2002. He was the first baby I carried to term - all the other boys were born at 33-34 weeks and our daughter was born at 30 weeks. No idea why he wasn't early- either the vitamins or maybe my body finally got its pregnancy clock right I continued to take the Rainbow Lights while nursing and through pregnancy with #9, who was also full-term. I like them because I just take 1 pill once a day and they don't upset my stomach like some of the others I've tried. I also take Nordic Naturals Omega Woman. I order through Vitacost or Drugstore.com, depending on who has the better discount or free shipping special.

I also give the children Rainbow Light Kid's One Multi-stars and Nordic Natural Children's DHA or 3-6-9 Junior.

I'm still pretty exhausted, but the culprit in my case is the 10 month old who still nurses at least 3 times a night and me not going to bed at an earlier hour

Now, could someone help me in the oil department? I took flax oil for awhile before I was pregnant and I do think it helped. My skin, hair and nails seemed healthier. I've been taking cod liver oil lately and my face is in a state of constant eruption--not zits, more like hives. But I can't figure out what is triggering them. I'm beginning to suspect the CLO. I'm also worried about too much Vitamin D with the CLO because we are outside a whole lot during the summer. And then there's Evening Primrose Oil...when to take that?

Does someone have this whole oil thing figured out for pregnancy and postpartum/nursing??

I take One-Source, I pick it up at Wal-Mart, it has the most vitamins and the highest % that I've found (without looking on-line). Also an iron pill every other day, very anemic = very tired. I try to take a Calcium Chew daily but am not fond of it and I cannot get Marianna to take it at all. So as calcium is so very important, I suppose I ought to give up on the chews and buy horse tablets again.

Tracy, I had a doctor tell me that it is nearly, for all practical purposes, impossible to get all your daily needs from food. (Sounds controversial ) Her point was two-fold: that as a human race we continue to mine and farm intensively and this results in the land being depleted of minerals, and that eating for vitamins/minerals will require eating way more than the daily requirements of certain foods just to reach the vitamin/mineral requirements.

Vitamins are just generally controversial, aren't they? No one has even mentioned liquid vitamins yet, (except cod liver and flax seed oils) and there is an entire gang that will only take liquids as tablets supposedly are not absorbed as well, or even dissolved so they say. My uncle is a liquid vitamin taker, a summer job as a teen emptying port-a-potties in the Rockies and seeing all the whole vitamins (he said you could even read the brand names imprinted on the tablets!) made him a firm believer in taking liquid supplements.

Right now I do take Centrum multivitamins - when I remember. I was thinking of taking supplements because I'm tired, have dry skin (and hair), I'm super pale and oh, did I mention tired? I would like to ask for some tests next week but I don't know what to ask for ~ anemic? thryoid? cholesterol?

I am so glad this thread is helping others. I think our nutrition is an important topic.

Dawn, I take Coromega, because I don't like the taste/texture of other oils, and my kids will take it, too. It's important to take while pregnant and nursing for baby's brain development. It has been very beneficial for my emotional state, too. There's not much it's not good for! The reason I don't use flax seed oil anymore is because it goes rancid so fast, even refrigerated, and the omegas in fish oil is supposed to be more bioavailable than in flax seed oil.

I'm a believer in the value of good supplements. I had a wonderful Catholic ob when I was pregnant with my third baby. I bled quite a bit in the beginning of my pregnancy, and he had me taking all kinds of supplements to try to avoid miscarrying. It apparently worked, though I might not of miscarried anyway.

Anyhow, I know that I would benefit from more supplements now, but my problem is that I have a hard time making it a habit. Why are the good habits so hard for me to develop, and the bad ones so hard for me to break?!

I use Shaklee. They are pricey but I have yet to find another brand I can tolerate. I'm not terribly good at remembering to take them when I'm not pregnant or nursing but pregnant if I don't take them I feel it the next day...so I remember.

Figured out? No. But the latest from Mercola is "Antarctic Pure Krill Oil Far Better Than Fish Oil at Providing Essential Omega-3s & Antioxidants ... "and it comes in capsule form which sounds to me alot better than trying to down the liquid.

I do remember reading that if you're in the sun a lot use the fish oil instead of the cod liver oil.

They are little bursting gel caps for the younger ones who can't swallow pills - they LOVE them. The 2 yo always reminds me to give him his "fishy oils". They taste like strawberry. https://www.nordicnaturals.com/direct/prodsummary.asp?ID=1

I can tell you're an educated Shaklee consumer! Biotin is 300 mcg . So, it passes that test. And it passes the water dissolubility test, too. It dissolved in water as quickly as the Shaklee one did.
The plus here, for me, is that it has some Raspberry leaf, ginger and spirulina in it. I do feel it hit my stomach, but I felt the Shaklee too.

Okay, I'm digging up an old thread.

I bought the TJs version of the Rainbow Lights. The smell is overpowering. I'm not pregnant yet, and I can't see how I could get past that smell once I was if I can't BEFORE I am! Any suggestions?
