The frumpiness thread had me thinking about framing our body image discussion in a healthy way. Wegman's has a great website, full of recipes and information. There is much support there for the Eat Well, Live Well Challenge. It's a very simple premise: 5 servings of fruits and veggies a day and 10,000 steps walking (using a pedometer). Sounds like the perfect summer fitness challenge to do with our kids! There's a conversion chart so that all those swimmers out there can convert their laps to steps. Anyone interested?

Elizabeth,

Count me in!

BTW, Dollar Tree stores sell pedometers for only a dollar (thus the name ). They are as accurate as any I have used in the past with a higher price.

Love,

Hey this sounds great and right in line with one of our family goals. We need the motivation to stay on top of physical exercise. I am still overweight from the pregnancy gain (and this dc is now 3 yo so it isn't just coming off like the rest) and I have a nodular goiter and low thyroid symptoms- but blood tests don't show a problem so it is a do nothing and re-check until it bottoms out enough to register on the blood tests as far as physicians are concerned. This seems like a reasonable approach, encourages many things dh and I have been discussing as matters to work on - but let me discuss with dh first. I know I'm more accountable any time I have to record what I'm doing. I know I won't be able to do organic - around here 2 organic apples are $4. We simply cannot afford organic, but that doesn't seem to be the main focus and there is so much solid, balance expressed here. I might even learn to be a better meal planner. I cannot wait to show my dh this site. Thanks for posting it.

The boys and I are ready to go!
Thanks for the idea!

My sis sent the boys pedometers for a little gift, and she bought them at the Dollar Tree!    They do work great!

i think it's a great idea and have done it before with those Walk Away the Pounds tapes. my problem is that i have never gotten a pedometer that was even slightly accurate, even the expensive ones from the sporting goods stores. i wish there was another way to measure steps. either way, i'm in!

We're in too. Apparantly having babies after 35 actually requires some sort of physical fitness. Who knew? We'll check in Aug 31. Thanks for the great idea!

This must be why my dh is now wearing a pedometer!

Guess I need to buy some more fruit. Next time we're down the mountain, we'll seek out pedometers, too!

No KIDDING! remember the day when just chasing after them kept the weight off? Now it seems like it doesn't help a'tall!

Exactly- I know I need to work on humility, I actually used to wonder why some older Moms complained about losing their "baby" fat. It just fell right off me- they must just be sitting around. Now, I'm the one chasing the toddler with 15 extra pounds hanging on.

After reading the varied comments here, I'm a little perplexed about pedometers. Can anyone recommend a reliable one?

The tracking chart seems like it would be a good thing to post. I know now the competition it's going to inspire here. Hopefully, THAT won't get out of hand.

I bought batteries for my Walkman today and I've got it loaded with a rosary CD for my morning walk. Needed a little kick to get back into that habit.

Keep coming back to report progress and helpful tips!

I'd like to be in but I simply cannot get a pedometer to accurately measure my steps. Once, it read two steps after an hour's walk! Apparently I must have flown!

From what I've gathered, my "large" waistline is the cause of the problem. What I don't understand is how people larger than I are able to use this? Granted, I have about 70 lbs to lose but I've read articles of people losing over 100 lbs using a pedometer to keep them on track. And I'm assuming that the large waistline would be an issue for moms-to-be in the last trimester?

I'd love to join you but my 50 minute walk/run (about 2 miles) this morning registered only 768 steps. At that rate, I'll never get to 10000 a day.

Any help/suggestions for me?

Taffy,
The large waistline thing confuses me. My fil has used a pedometer for a few years now, since being diagnosed as a diabetic. I guarantee his waistline was bigger than yours when he began . I'm wondering about this technology.    You could use thisconversion chart for measureable activities? You wouldn't have the benefit of all the daily activity steps, but it would be a beginning...

I haven't gotten pedometers yet and I'm not sure I will until I can be sure of a good one. Then, it's going to depend on how much they each cost...

Do you take big steps?

Ok, ok, I know, big help....

How do you all get out long enough for a walk? Nights are not my husband's forte and morning's are not mine...and when I walk with the 4 troopers...we've got 5 different paces ...

Advice? please?

Can't help you Maria. I'm a "crack o' dawn" walker. I like to see the sunrise.

We walk just before dinner. I keep it warm in the oven, fill up the water pitchers, set the table... and we eat when we get back. I have to take all the kids or I never get out. I just take the stroller and hit the road!

I'd like to, too...if I were awake!    I have found that I sleep hard between 4:00am and 7:00, generally. I was thinking that dh doesn't leave for work until 7:30am....maybe I could wake at 6:30 and go???

For me, I don't get much time without noise and the one thing I really enjoy is a cup of coffee in the quiet. I don't always get it, but I enjoy it...

Maybe I can learn to mortify???? That's not a bad idea...

you are so blessed to be able to get out so early! I too sleep hard right around the time dh is getting ready for work. Because I am nursing, I also need that quiet down time first thing in the AM with the little ones. I am not a morning person by nature anyway...I love walking when the sun is lower in the sky...I feel I can take more time because my work is mostly done for the day...but! That is just me!
