Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My oldest is high school, age 17, but she is gone out of the house for almost the entire day due to school and rehearsals. I treat her as if she had a job outside the house. Another way to think of her might be as a visiting relative. :)

I don't ask her to do a lot, except when she has a day off. Her schedule is kind of irregular, so assigning her to do dishes daily or take out trash weekly may not happen because she might not be home for hours.

What I am realizing is that it means I need to delegate more of the chores to the younger kids. They won't all be here forever.

I also have a 17 yr old high school senior. She's working 2 part time jobs and doing school at home. Yes she does chores.. helps with general clean up when she's home. Helps with some transportation of younger siblings and we switch who's doing dishes daily. She's not in the regular rotation but she still gets the same number of days of dishes in as the other kids we just put hers on her days off.

Seriously, I've btdt all my life with different family members coming and going. You either pay for room and board or you need to be contributing to the household. Anything less creates a situation that will end by hurting relationships.

When older working siblings pay room and board, we give a portion to younger siblings for extra chores they do to make up any slack. It gives the youngers spending money and lessens any frustration over an increase in their chores. The older ones still help out whenever they are available. We try to keep things realistic, with everyone contributing to the household, as they will need to in their own homes oneday!
