Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have a friend -- who lives on the other side of the world -- whose father was given only a few more years to live, possibly even 1 or 2. I'm at a loss. How do I help, besides prayer?

Just clarifying as it would impact my response.

My friend says 1-2 based on what the doctor said.

Thanks, Mary.

Is your friend going to be a caregiver for the parent? or is it just the dread of the inevitable being much closer than expected?

I think sometimes the best thing you can give anyone is to be a sounding board.. where they can complain and be selfish and vent and so be able to pick up the pieces and go on the next day. And while it limits the hugs it's certainly possible over distance.

When my mom passed away, I found prayers for the souls in purgatory and masses offered for her very comforting. Perhaps your friend would be similarly consoled by prayers offered for her father. Prayers for the dying or masses might offer your friend and her father comfort in the days ahead. Praying for them, and for you.
