Here I am again, looking for gift ideas! My nieces don't read a lot, although I would not mind choosing books for them (especially since a lot of my favorites are on the book chat thread!). Niece #1 is in 7th grade and niece #2 is 10. I don't see them often.
I'm hoping for suggestions on:
Trendy accessories for girls (brands, styles, things that your daughters have loved);
The newest books everyone is reading (non-twaddle preferred) and classic books that non-readers might actually open and start reading;
Volleyball/sports practice must-haves;
Fun surprise items (I already have marking pens, fun socks and lip balm in fun flavors)

I have two volleyball girls in the house. Some possibilities are a bag (one of mine prefers a sack-pack and one prefers a duffel); also, if they're on a team with lots of tournaments, then one of those fleece blankets tied all the way around in a volleyball pattern would be good. They sell tons of cute t-shirts for volleyball with cute sayings and such. (Be careful you don't accidentally get a risque one-some things have double meanings for kids and sadly they will put that on a t-shirt-I have to check with my teen girl  .) A personalized water bottle would be cool, too.

My dd, who is ten, still loves beanie babies- there really are so many cute ones to chose from, and AC Moore has them as low as $2.99 sometimes.
She also loves the pretty scarf she got for her birthday- pink and sparkly (from Lands End clearance, but not a winter scarf).
Lands End sales on line also has a lot of kids back to school stuff.
I bought two of these cinch sacks to give as gifts this year.
With the extra 30% off (ends today) they are only about $5 each, and they even have camo.
Pretty cards/stationery (think TJ Maxx or Marshalls) and/or return address have also been a big hit here.

Boxed page a day calendars! We LOVE these- always have several around the house.
Happy Notes is a good one. My dd had this one a couple of years ago and we all enjoyed it.
What Cats Can Teach Us is on the list for my cat lovers this year.
You can find page a day calendar for any theme, which is what makes them so great. Ds is getting a Star Wars one, and Myth Busters is going in our school room.
I always look to see if anyone is selling it third party on Amazon, and I can pick them up for $3-4. Adding on the $3.99 shipping still only makes the total $7-8 dollars for a new calendar, vs. $10-13

You might look for some of the graphic novels.. those can be more interesting to non-readers than books just filled with words.
One step further.. if they travel on a bus.. one of the fleece blankets that can be folded into a pillow would be really nice.. also an mp3 player if they don't have something.. if they do have something, maybe just a new set of ear buds.. my kids seem to always need more. 
jammie pants.. they're not just for bedtime anymore  a lot of kids involved in sports seem to want to pull on some of the flannel or fleece jammie pants to be comfy rather than sweats or jeans. And for some reason my kids of all ages love new jammies. 
For my kids in this age range it seemed important for them to get things that made them feel more grown up (clothing or something more trendy) but also to still get something for the child part.. even my just turned 13 yr old.. while she loved new clothes also still wanted clothes for her American Girl doll.

My daughter is 12 and in 7th grade. Things that were huge hits from Christmas last year and still get used a ton here were:
Infinity scarf
Shrink art jewelry making kit and her birthday is in January and she got more plain shrinky dink paper and nice colored pencils
Paper fashions
EOS lip balms, nail polish, new thick pony tail holders, journals and new gel pens are always a big hit too.
She likes Toby Mac and the band 1 Girl Nation A $5 itunes card would be appreciated too I'm sure.
{A note about graphic novels--"Smile" is a popular one now (even on some local public school suggested/required reading lists--but use caution--it's sequel "Drama" has a homosexual storyline.}

My 15 yo daughter just opened an etsy shop. She has patterns and kits for making bendy dolls of all the Doctor Who Doctors. I don't know if they are all loaded yet, but she is planning to load the Doctors and has a kit for each one. I think they would make fabulous gifts! She is also finishing up some Doctor Who earrings and necklaces that should be up soon. Adorable!

How does trademark work with things like that, Michelle? We've been led down the copyright/trademark rabbit trail around here recently and we are having trouble making sense of it all.

My girls like Kath Kidston patterns in all kinds of things. Stickers, address books, mugs...
Knitting and sewing is becoming very popular among young girls here. There are some great "How to" books for beginners/girls with really neat doable first projects.

Well, that's a good question. I normally wouldn't allow any kind association with a franchise, but in this case the fans have been making their own things for 50 years. This particular franchise is so fan-friendly that they actually encourage this kind of thing. If you go on etsy right now and do a search you will find fan-created knitted hats, jewellery, mugs, etc.
I would absolutely discourage this with pretty much any other franchise.
