The Time Management thread has me thinking about my kid's schedules. One child, in particular really needs a schedule. He is my "spirited" child, and as I learn more about him, I realize that he needs routine, and he needs to know whats coming next. I would like to post a schedule for him but he can't read yet. Has anyone done something like this with pictures? How did you make it work? I thought about taking a picture of him doing each thing from brushing his teeth in the morning to saying his prayers at night, then posting it on the wall so he can see what comes next. It seems like this would take up an aweful lot of space but maybe it would be worth it for a while. Any thoughts on this?

I think that children like that crave the routine of a schedule and they may appreciate the visual. If that's the case, it's worth the time and space. We have a hcart with pictures and all of my children appreciate, regardless of temperament. They just like to know what comes next.You'lll have to talk a lot about what makes a task complete. It won't be enough to see a picture of himself picking up his bedroom--he needs to know the steps involved in a clean room. But the visual reminder is a good start.Those pictures don't have to be huge. You can reduce them 2X2 or 3X3 and probably still retain the visual reminder.

We use Managers of Their Chores that Cay provided the link for. It really works well for us, even with our 4yo & 2yo. I just took photos of them doing the chores they needed to do and attached them to cardstock. They and the older children "wear" their cards on their clothing in a badge holder-type thing. I made 3 sets of chore cards (morning, afternoon & evening) for each child. Only the littles have photos on theirs. They work through each set during that particular chore time.
I know I'm not describing this very well. I wish I could post some photos of ours.

It's worth it, Becky!
I did that with my oldest, who needed and loved the steps. We drew pictures, so they weren't perfect, but the chart worked so well!

Something I used to do (in my classroom) was take pictures of kids doing the chores (washing chalkboard, sweeping floor) then laminated it and hung them on several O-Rings, flip chart style, very small, compact, easily hung up for storage, and easily handed out at choretime! Something very similar could be done in a home, also I think there was a thread with a similar idea with holy cards for a child's book at Mass that might have clearer instructions...

Great idea Jennifer - the light has switched on for me. I have unfortunately a slightly different routine each day depending on Mass times ect, so it can't be helped plus is one day for music with other homeschoolers - all these things mean for me more sheets! But to laminate and flip chart style - you have solved my problem from sifting through sheets and sheets...

I remember when my dd4 was 2 y.o., I modified an idea from Elizabeth Pantley's book, The No Cry Sleep Solution. I wanted her to remember her bedtime routine so we don't have to argue about it each night. I took 5 (5x7) photos of her--eating dinner, brushing teeth, taking a bath, reading her bedtime books, and sleeping. I pasted this on a poster board (that she decorated with stamps and stickers), numbered each photo (at that time, she was also learning her numbers), and taped it up on her bedroom door. It was so successful that the poster eventually became more decor than a reference for her.
I'm now working on something similar, though using smaller-sized photos, for our current routines, that now include her younger sister. I figure I'll try this method again since it worked well the first time! We'll be doing it more calendar-style, so they'll both know if it's a ballet class day or a zoo class day, or park day, etc.

These ideas are great. I keep going back and forth between this thread and the other time management thread. I've been praying that we would have more order in our day...I think God is giving me plenty of answers to that prayer! Now I just have to DO it. Hopefully, now that we're officially done with school for summer, I'll have a little extra time to put a chart together. I think I'll do one for all the kid's bedroom's that helps them to know what I mean by "clean your room" as well as a master schedule type chart with pictures for my non readers to follow. Thanks everyone, for all your great ideas!
