Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have seen the "big pile of books for Christmas" idea on several blogs now over the past couple of years.   Books have always been a part of celebrations at my house, but this year I am thinking of beefing it up into the
"big pile of books" realm.

Between thrift stores, used book sales and online stores like Amazon's bargain bin ( and their used book sellers) and BookOutlet.com, I think the idea could be very budget friendly.

My question is this: if you are a big pile of books giver, how do the kids like it? Does it go over well each year, or does it get old.... or do you feel overwhelmed by the number of books? Do you have any hints or tips for the novice?

BookOutlet right now has so many nice childrens books right now at such great prices it would be an excellent time to shop. Yes, I am already thinking ahead to Christmas... because now it is August, but tomorrow it will probably be October already, and then I feel pressured and behind, wanting to be finished shopping by Advent (which never happens).

What usually happens is that I fall sick some time in December and wish I had all my shopping done.

Do you mean to read for Advent leading up to Christmas or giving a big pile of books as a gift on Christmas morning? I googled "big pile of books for Christmas" and haven't found anything Do you have some links to what you mean?

Ok- I think I first got the idea from Charlotte's Waltzing Matilda Blog.
I linked a post http://www.waltzingm.com/2011/12/christmas-morning.html that mentions the big pile of books each child gets on Christmas morning (scroll down to find the line that mentions it).

Some of the books are new, some have been read but the family did not have its own copy.

Jessica at Shower of Roses also did a post about it here:
Pile of Books for Chirstmas Morning

The more I think about this idea, the more I love it. After all the anticipation of Advent and the excitement of Christmas morning, a big pile of books to dive into would be a peaceful moment on Christmas Day.

Honestly, books are not huge hits on Christmas morning here. Now that the kids are older, some, yes. I am not a big shopper during the rest of the year so I tend to give books at Christmas and it just seems right, but they are never nearly as exciting as one of the boys opening a new airsoft gun or the girls a new purse or longed-for something or other. What does this say about books and my family? I hope nothing as we love books here. :)

Well since I don't often get newer books.. the kids love getting some books for Christmas and I try and get each something they've wanted or something I think they'll love. So while it's not a pile of books as the main gift.. the kids do get excited about getting another book or 3 each.

I tend to buy fluffier books at Christmas time than I might throughout the year. They are usually well received, but there isn't the hush of silence while they all forget the rest of the gifts as described in the post.

I love buying books as gifts, though. It makes me wish we were Icelandic.
