I have been homeschooling going on 5 years. I have not really bonded with anyone locally that homeschools. DD10 has a best friend that lives near by, which is wonderful, but it tends to be drop off and run, carpool, but no friendship for us moms. We have many of the same values, strive for academics, both Christian(she is not Catholic, but respects that we are, and is in fact a little envious that we are, maybe converts soon?). The girls get on well, but we just don't connect.
In going to functions, I am typically the outsider. I have a home daycare as well, which means I have many little people with me most of the time. Everyone has their little groups, and I am on the shy side, and feel awkward trying to meet new people when they are all talking like they've known each other forever.
Recently, someone started a little facebook group for people that are striving to meet the learning outcomes of the province. It's a breath of fresh air. I fine that others want to unschool, or use different methods, but find that when I mention I want to 'align', I'm scolded and told I'm not really homeschooling, that I'm not doing right by my child... etc. So this little group consists of only 24 families at the moment.
A couple weeks ago I reached out and asked if other moms would like to get together for coffee just one night a month. I got a positive response, and we got together tonight. It was such fun :) We came from all stages, new homeschoolers just starting, more veteran, catholic, Christian, believers but no church, little kids, some adult kids. Our commonality was 'aligning' and it was a perfectly lovely evening :) I am finding that the 'great divide' in the homeschool community here, is not what religion you are, it's not if you are wealthy, have a large family, or an only child family, it's not if you practice your faith, while there is *some of that* it seems that it's whether if you align to the provincial curriculum. If you are, you are ridiculed. It's very interesting.
So tonight, our little eclectic group got together and we laughed and laughed. We had some serious moments, it was fabulous.
I would love to have a group of Catholic friends, and form those bonds with. But there is our 'divide' it's harder to come together due to what we are choosing to teach. We might even use the same things for catechism, but the difference in programming seems to be the hardest to over come :( I am going to see if I can find some within the school board that would like to meet over summer, as it's a catholic school board, that might work....
It was a wonderful evening, it was nice to connect with moms who understood our goals for our kids, and shared them. They also got that while we have the same learning outcomes, we all take different approaches and methods, and no one took exception to it. We'll be doing this again :)
As one mom put it "coffee AND curriculum *swoon*" LOL

YAY!! it is sooooo nice to have those sorts of things. In my experience they don't happen often and you generally lean toward that you have in common since we can all be so different in other areas but...I'm so happy that you had such a nice time.

It was a lot of fun.
It was neat. One is a bitter, and lapsed catholic, grew up in the era of corporal punishment is a parochial school :( very sad. Against organized religion for herself, but understands the need for faith. Another was Christian, another denomination, and I *think* the other was Catholic, she didn't fully come out and say so. Opinions were stated, but for a nice change while religion did come up, and opinions were stated, everyone was respectful, no one was offensive or offended. Very refreshing.
We plan to meet again in a month or so.
