as opposed to reading a digital book?
While I love the convenience of ebooks, I think I will always prefer to have a real book in hand if possible.
So, one of my very favorite things about real book is that they don't have to be recharged! No worries that you will get shut down in the middle of one...

My favorite thing.. being able to flip around in the book.. see how many pages to the next chapter and go back and reread a section and such. All things you can do with an e-book but it takes s.o. m.u.c.h. t.i.m.e.

The memory. There is a particular experiential memory of reading books having to do with seeing their cover each time you pick it up, the varied weight and size and print, and even the smell if it is an older book--yellowed pages for one, brand new crisp white pages and an unbroken spine for another. All the books on my ereader feel the same.

Ditto. I can also generally remember how a passage looks in the book, including illustrations.
I love too many things about real books.
I mark my books. I know some of that can be done digitally, but it's not the same physical act that helps my memory.
And seeing the physical book reminds me of it's presence, pricks me to read, and I also can find the books because they have a location, not just in my digital library.
I do not have much retention when I read on digital screens.
The shelves of books inspire my boys to read. They see the spines that Daddy and Mommy read. They are interested and inspired. That is how I expanded, reading the books off my parents' shelves.
I love being able to scan spines and thumb through a book to figure out if I'm in the mood for a book. My sons do this, too.

I have to add that I love reading the inscriptions I find in old books...
just a peek into someone else's life.
Real books jus have a sense of character that ebooks can never hope to have:
sorry, Mr. Margarine, you will never be butter!

Oh, I agree, Melinda, on the inscriptions! I have this beautiful old missal that has an inscription from the husband-to-be to his wife-to-be, recognizing the Mass as the most important part of their life....the ultimate romance to me!

I like making seasonal displays with books (advent, lent etc...)
Having my children read the very same books I read as a child.
The ease of doing my own cross referencing. For example, when I read over the Sunday readings I like to consult a couple of different books - with paper books I can have them open and spread over the table so that I can easily look from one to the other, whereas having a screen open to more then one book is tricky (and the electronic equivalent of pulling one book to me and pushing another further away but not out of sight, doesn't really exist).
The fact that paper books do not need third party technology to read. I have a ebook in a format that no one is producing a reader for anymore and because it was DRMed I can't legally convert it into a format I have a reader for.
I do like the convenience of ebooks and the fact that the existence of ebooks and such projects as Gutenburg means that I can read books that would otherwise been very difficult to find or afford.
Ideally, I'd have both paper and ebook copies of all my books. Hard copies for settling down on the couch reading or at the table studying, to display or loan out. Ebooks for convenience (I found a small ereader much easier to deal with then a paper book when nursing), reading while waiting or during car trips.

The tactile relationship with ink on paper. The feeling of permanence. The smell. The connection to past readers and history of older books.

Bringing books to my co-op classes and propping them up on the chalkboard ledge...When I taught the younger grades I did this for every class, and told them how to find the books at the library. I know some of my students went to their local branches to find books on Incas, sharks, etc. after seeing the book display in class.
No teacher can prop up/display a bunch of e-readers and get the same effect.

Ereaders make all books alike- same size, print, etc, which can get very dull.
Reading loses some of the appeal to the senses that Ellie mentioned.

Yes to all of this! I will always, always prefer the sensory experience of real books, but I have to admit it is nice to have a hundred books at my fingertips on the e-reader when traveling, etc. I also like that books on the e-reader cannot get crumpled/torn pages.  We download a lot of library books too, and I like the convenience of not having to 1) travel to the library and 2) worry about overdue books.

Yes, this is especially true for picture books! Some were designed small to fit in a child's hands better (Beatrix Potter)... others have especially rich, thick paper that just makes touching the paper FEEL GOOD (e.g "And then it was Spring").
I can tolerate some books on e-readers... especially ones I've bought that I don't care to display on my shelf like reference material or my book on candida.
But I can't wrap my brain around picture books in electronic form...
